  1. Hi!
I am currently using Final Cut Pro and i have an canopus ADVC 110.

I tried to connect my DVD output ( which is playing a NTSC disc ) to my ADVC110 and connected it to my mac.

But whenever i try to "capture" it using the settings Firewire NTSC, the image is black and white.

Is my 110 capable of supporting such NTSC format?
Are there a lot of different types of NTSC format? Eg: SECAM???

I also tried playing with the swithes located at the bottom of the hardware, but still unable to capture.

    Please advice.
    Cheers!

Is this a PAL DVD player?
    DVD Player model number?
    What country are you in?

It would work if you had an NTSC DVD player.
Easier to extract MPeg2 from the Video TS file on the computer.

  3. Mine is a philips DVD player.
    I am living in Singapore.

If i convert to mpeg2, will i be able to import it in via final cut pro?
    I haven tried it before.

WHich software has the LEAST loss from converting VOB to MPEG2?

    Please advice.
    Cheers!

You already have the files on DVD, so it's just more straightforward and less trouble-prone to work directly with the files you already have on DVD. No capture step is required in between. Do a quick search on this website for guides on how to extract files from a DVD. DVD movies are encoded in MPEG2 format already -- the VOB files you refer to contain the MPEG2 video, among other things, so extraction is not hard. You can use tools like ffmpegX to do the job. If the DVD is encrypted to begin with, you'll need to rip it first. Major's ffmpegX site has a collection of user guides that you will find very useful to get started.

The reason your NTSC DVD playing on a PAL DVD player won't work for dub is the way the PAL player outputs in analog. It outputs a non-standard "Psuedo PAL" intended only for PAL TV display. If you had a real NTSC DVD player, and this was not a protected DVD, then you could capture the S-Video or composite output with the ADVC-110.

Better to work directly from the files on the DVD.

From EdDV's answer, it sounds like you have a PAL DVD player, which would explain the lack of color. Some DVD players have a menu option for changing between NTSC and PAL; don't know if yours is one of them. Fish around your setup menu and see if you get lucky.

As for formats, there's NTSC and PAL (slight variations in the latter), and hardly any SECAM (sorry, France and Russia and...). NTSC and PAL are sufficiently similar that supporting both in a player is relatively easy to do at low cost. SECAM is different enough that the greater expense has made multistandard players relatively rare. Indeed, all the DVDs I've bought from France have been NTSC or PAL-encoded, which suggests that their players must do a conversion into SECAM for display on their TVs.

But in any case, it remains true that working directly from the files on the DVD is by far your best option, especially since you seem concerned about quality loss.

  7. Thanks for all the comments!

I tried using a WINDOWS convertor - YASA DVD TO MPEG
Tried converting the VOB file to MPG2, AVI
When imported into FCP, it seems OK... but there seems to be a lot of lines..
Tried the De-INTERLACE filter but doesnt seems to work rather well..

    Tried DVD Decrypter.
Tried to demux into raw streams ( m2v and ac3 ) and VOB as well..
    Same problem as above..

Tried FFMPEGX, now still "converting" the whole VOB into .DV
Hope it will turn out well.
Btw, is there anyway i can like "rip" a SECTION from FFMPEGX?

I will see what i can do with the DVD OUTPUTING NTSC tomorrow.

THANKS once again for all the help!
    Cheers!

Lost in the discussion so far is what your ultimate objectives are. Perhaps if you could explain that, we could offer you more specific advice.

You are starting with a DVD. What do you want to end up with, when all is said and done?

  9. Hi!
My output is actually just a NTSC DVD.

What i am trying to do is to "capture" the video into FCP.
    Add in a logo.
    Export out mov file.
Export out "AUDIO ONLY" track ( this is the MTV MMO - Music only )

    Using DVD Studio,
create a track with the MTV,
    add in 2nd audio

Burn to DVD ( NTSC )

i tried to use FFMEPGX to "get" my NTSC video in.
    So far so good.
Exported it out as well and burnt it using DVD studio.
But there seems to be quite some "interlacing"

    Cheers!

So, this is a 480i/29.97 DVD (not film)
Are you keeping all the settings 480i/29.97?

If so the interlacing lines will appear wherever there is motion. This is normal just like it is for non-progressive PAL.

The goal is an NTSC DVD? If so, keep interlace if quality is the goal.
Deinterlace to progressive is possible but will introduce artifacts. Deinterlace would be necessary to convert to PAL (most techniques).
