First, you shouldn't hijack a thread...just start your own.

Second, The copyright issue is macrovision. There were a few older Lite-On units that you could disable macrovision to copy VHS tapes. None of the newer models can be disabled as far as I know. For the most part, it is a waste of time anyway (unless you are trying to save titles that aren't available on DVD).

I've split this off as a separate thread.
MacroVision can be defeated with a TBC. This gadget goes between the output from the VHS and the input to the DVD recorder, so mostly it can't be used with DVD/VHS combos.

You don't need a full TBC just to remove MacroVision altohugh a TBC does have other advantages. There are devices known (cryptically) as "video stabilisers" which can remove various types of copy protection. The suppliers are deliberately vague about their real purpose through fear of legal action. They are more likely to sell you one if you have bought something from them before. As a rule, they do not welcome sales enquiries from complete strangers.

You can purchase this Digital Video Stabalizer for $20.

I ordered on about a month ago to... uh... "backup" a VHS with macrovision that has never come out on DVD. Worked like a charm for me and the resulting capture was better than anything I had seen before. Almost made me want to go back and recapture a bunch of old family videos.

I have used the DVS and it works great. Transfered a bunch of Beta & VHS tapes and it worked on both formats.

  7. The thread lordsmurf gave is one that should be read
A Quote as to a [video stabilizer etc]
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Again, a FULL FRAME TBC is the best option, not these things”
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had used a PC and an older capture card that had no problems with analog MV as in a VHS tape but no longer do for some 2-1/2 yr. I now use a stand-alone unit that serves the purpose
Many recorder units over compensate and indicate MV when it really isn’t there
A Stabilizer might help and many have reported good results using them with MV but many times than can create more problems than they solve.

    In a case of mine
I had 2 tapes that produced a perfect picture except when connected to a recorder. At the very top 1-in it had a bend of a good 45 deg. to the left. [Picture was OK] It did not look as MV and I had no problems before this, on a large number of tapes.
I connected a friend’s stabilizer and the bend was a little worse and the picture was some what distorted.

I than connected a Full Frame TBC and the problem was solved

Would I buy such a unit for 2 tapes, NO --- But if I had to I would rather spend $ 250 and get excellent results than $20 - $50 for mediocre. Or nothing as in to many cases

Remember. In VHS tape we are talking Analog MV,--- Not Digital CP

I second the SIMA CT-2, I backed up all my VHS movies from and external VCR through the SIMA with very good results.
