There are no "best codec packages" for any operating system. Codec packs can create really strange problems. It is best to only install specific codecs as you need them.

Strangely enough, there is a 'Vista Codec Pack', that works fairly well and uses standard programs and codecs. I've always been against most any codec packs, especially after seeing the damage the K-Lite codec pack has caused. But Vista is a little different. Not all XP programs run on it. It can be difficult to play back some videos.

The one I have used in several Vista installs: http://www.digital-digest.com/news-60398.html Digital Digest has always been trustworthy, and this pack seems to do what it says without any added 'problems'.

The latest version of the CCCP codec pack for Vista is also popular, but be careful.......... More is not always better.

VLC media player will handle most any format, a good player program and a good alternative to installing a codec you would rarely use.

It's always the best advice to install only the codecs you need to work with the files you have. Adding unnecessary codecs will only cause problems. I would always set a restore point before running any codec installer. Don't add them on top of other similar installed codecs. Starting with a 'clean slate' is best. Delete all but the system codecs before adding any type of 'package'.

Removing a codec is much, much harder than installing one.
