  1. I got DVDfab decrypter. Seems to work fine. So I copied a movie to my hard drive. It shows up as 6 .vob files, and a few other small .ifo and .bup files.

So then, using the recommended settings in Nero, I try to burn a copy to DVD. I'm using a Pioneer 108 burner, and Verbatim DVD+R DL media.

I used the UFD mode, dumped all the files from the Video_TS folder into Nero, and burned away. What I get is a DVD with all the files on it, but it seems like it's just in data mode or something. My standalone player doesn't recognize it, but neither do my computers. When you insert the disc they open up Explorer and just show the contents. It won't play like a DVD, unless I use VLC player and manually open the .vob files.

Did I miss a step here?

Try instead Imgburn, drag and drop the video_ts folder and burn.

Are the files still within the VIDEO_TS directory on the disc, or did you just burn the files within the directory straight to the disc? (In other words, did you burn the directory? Plus, I'd also recommend using Imgburn for taking a VIDEO_TS directory and burning it to disc...)

(edit: Baldrick beat me to the Imgburn recommendation. )

  4. Errr, no, I just dragged the files themselves. You need to drag the whole folder over?

    I'll try the Imgburn.

I guess this kind of thing is to be expected for a first time attempt. The only thing that pisses me off is how expensive these damn DL discs are.

Don't use Nero for DL. You will waste DL discs. You can use the freeware ImgBurn and the 'Build' mode with the VIDEO_TS folder. Be careful setting the layer break, as that is where many DLs can have problems.

If you use Nero for a regular DVD-5, drop the contents of your VIDEO_TS folder into the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD-Video mode.

EDIT: I see I typed a lttle slow.

Yes, the files must be in a VIDEO_TS folder. For the DVD specifications and format, see 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page. <<<<<<
