Newbie needs a Video Editing Software to Replace Windows Movie Maker

Hey. I came here because my Movie Maker software that comes standard with Windows sucks and has lots of issues with shutting down. I need a free video Editing Software that can do at least what Movie Maker does and not suck( meaning it wont freeze up and shut down a lot)

I am running a Pentium4 3.0ghz, a Nvidia 5200 video card with 128mb, and 2 gb of ram.

Not a lot of decent freeware editors out there. What format do you need to edit? Cuttermaran does MPEG files. There are a couple of others. For AVI type files, VirtualDub and VD Mod do as well as many. For WMV, you may be stuck with a MS solution.

But if you do a fair amount of editing, you might want to invest in a payware editor. For MPEG, MPEG-VCR is cheap enough. For AVI, VirtualDub or VDM is still a good choice.

I dont do heavy editing. just cutting 5 minute home videos to music mainly. i could even use something that has less features than movie Maker as long as it is less buggy. I edit in mpg and avi and wmv.

You could do worse than Adobe Premiere Elements. The older version (1.0) still turns up on ebay occasionally. It has DVD authoring which comes in handy.

It's very good. I still use it sometimes, even though I've got versions 2 and 3 as well.

If you search 'video editing software' on ebay, you should find plenty of other inexpensive packages.
