  1. Looking for the best codec that I should be using for file editing. I've been using MP4 and it works fine for most applications but can be a bit too grainy at 640x480. I just recently had to split a file into two parts(long story) and then re-merge them on my PC via VirtualDub. Well, the filesize was originally like 975MB but when I split the file into and remerged it with Virtualdub I saved as .avi and did no compression and it ended up being 13.5GB. So I went back and compressed w/ MP4 and it did like 150MB(but it's a bit grainy). Is there any good codecs you guys would recommend to get me a little better picture but still keeping the filesize to less than 1GB?

    Thanks!

If you split the file using Direct Stream Copy to save the parts - and I assume you did or the parts would several GB's each - then you can also use this to join them together again without the need to re-encode.

AVIDemux is another option for joining to parts to make a whole.
