BenQ Lightscribe // Asus P5B incompatibility?

So I bought a new intel computer last week with an Asus P5B mobo. but i didnt get the store to install a drive for me cause i was going to take one out of my old computer and save $50.

I have a fairly new BenQ Lightscribe drive, less than a year old. It worked fine in my old computer. Then when I got the new computer and tried to install windows i got an error message that said CDBoot: Couldn't find NTLDR.

I went through numourous troubleshooting documents on the issue and then finally took the computer into the store i bought it from. they told me that this drive is at fault for preventing the boot cd from loading correctly. has anyone heard of a drive being incompatible with the motherboard or something? i'd like to know if this is common before i shell out for another drive.

Are you sure about the boot sequence in bios and that the cd/dvdrom is set as the primary boot device? If you are attempting to install Windows XP and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive. I had this happen to me once when I left a non-bootable floppy in the floppy drive and the boot seq looked at the floppy first. Just a thought - good luck.

oh i definitely had the benq drive set to primary boot device. i tried many different settings and the only conclusion i got from the store was the drive was at fault. just curious if anyone else had this exact problem.

Are you sure in the BIOS the BENQ drive is set to BOOTUP FIRST? I'd suggest you check your BIOS settings. Because your BENQ drive could be set to primary but the BOOT ORDER could be set to bootup to your hard drive/floppy drive first. Also what type of ide cable are you using? Make sure you're using a 80 wire ide cable with the drive and make sure you have the jumper set correctly to MASTER or SLAVE.

Also in the BIOS make sure you have it set to PATA & SATA enabled. If this setting is not done this could be the reason you're getting the error msg. I had 2 ASUS p4p800se mobos that had to have it set to "ENHANCED MODE", which enabled PATA & SATA drives to be used. The "ENHANCED MODE" is to be used for operating sytem XP. Check your P5B mobo manual for BIOS settings.

hi budz, yes i was 100% positive it was set to first, my computer whiz friend even double checked for me.

to follow up on the whole thing i just got back from the computer store and they let me try a different brand dvd writer for myself and i watched windows boot. so i bought a LG burner for $45. apparently benq stopped making drives 6 months ago and some of them do have compatibility issues. if i was ripped off, so be it.

I've never heard of any of the BENQ 1655 drives have compatibility issues with mobos unless the nvidia drivers were used instead of microsoft drivers . If your drive was still under warranty I'd rma it. LITEON bought out the BENQ optical drive division last year. If your rma went through you'd probably get a LITEON 18x lightscribe drive.

well the good news is that i'm probably hanging on to my old computer and if i do, that benq will stay in there (alongside an even older benq) and it will be a burning station. although i've never been able to burn two discs at once ever.

also this benq drive in question is no sweat leaving out of my new computer cause i was finding that most of my latest burns were not verifying in nero. i'd rma it but it's OEM and i dont have the receipt. i guess there's always a degree of risk with the cheap burners and this might be a good example of that. it might be good just as a lightscribe machine then

Don't use NERO to verify your burns. Use CD/DVD SPEED to scan your discs.
