Quick question for the FCP gurus here...

I have about 3 different monitor setups that I use depending on where I am, my laptop only, my laptop and widescreen monitor, and my laptop and standard monitor. Each one has a different layout saved, however its somewhat of a pain.

I was just curious, is there anyway for FCP to automatically load the specific layout depending on which monitor is plugged in? The reason I ask is that I notice that depending on what monitor is loaded the choices in my layouts menu is changed accordingly, so it doesn't seem unreasonable for it to detect the monitor and then change layout accordingly.

thanks to anyone who could help!

the problem is that FCP uses the last monitor layout you chose
to save to it's preferences, so that the next time you start FCP,
it automatically chooses that layout by default.

So to answer your question, you would need to save different
FCP prefs, each with the monitor layout of your choice,
    as your default choice,
and then switch the prefs out Before launching FCP.

so in a sense you would have a folder on the desktop
    labeled:
    FCP Prefs

    and then have three sub-folders:

    laptop
    laptop wide
    laptop stand

and in each of these would be the same files:
    Final Cut Pro x.x Preferences
    Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
    Final Cut Pro Pref Cache

but each would corrospond to the layout named on the sub-folder.

An Automator script app could be written to find these files,
and then replace them with (copies of) your choices.
You would write three seperate Automator apps,
    save them to your desktop,
and then run the app of your choice BEFORE launching FCP
and then the default layout would be automatically changed
    for you.
