Audio suddenly stops working in Media Player Classic, for files that used to play fine a moment ago. Tried to enable/ disable AC3 in options, to no effect. Tried to d/l and extract a fresh copy of MPC on top of the old, to no effect. Then, I extracted the fresh copy but renamed it. mplayerc (2).exe works just fine! But when I delete the old and rename the new as mplayerc.exe, audio stops working again. What the hell?
Using Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 and Creative SB X-Fi. VLC media player works just fine, and I could go on using the renamed MPC exe which works equally well, but this is just bugging me something fierce. Anybody know what could cause this?

Probably a mpc setting in the windows register that is just set for mplayerc.exe. Maybe you could delete all mpc register setting(google it).
And have you checked so you don't have changed the default audio output setting in mpc? View->Options->Playback->Output->DirectShow audio -
Media Player Classic (and the HomeCinema version as well) have an option to store settings in an .ini file (View > Options > click Player in the left pane of the Options window > see whether or not the checkbox next to "Store settings to .ini file" is checked). You might check whether or not there's an mplayerc.ini file in the same directory as the .exe.

DirectShow audio is set for 'System Default'.
'Store settings into .ini file' is unchecked, although I imagine it was checked before I copied over the old mplayerc.exe, because the ini-file was in the same directory. I deleted that already, to see if it did anything (it didn't).
I'm not sure I wanna start mucking about the registry. I understand it's a bit risky and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Maybe I'll just stick to the renamed exe.
But at least I know now what my options are. Thank you very much. -

This is a windows Vista problem since it was fixed modifying the registry. I am using Media Player Classic (MPC) with the exe name "mpc-hc.exe" I did a search in the registry for this executable, you will find it many time, but do a search under this location.
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Inter net Explorer\\LowRegistry\\Audio\\PolicyConfig\\Proper tyStore\\"
-note: this form seems to be putting spaces into the address, don't add the spaces.
There will be many folders ("Key's" what regedit calls them) with an eight character hexcode with an _0 at the end for example 108ac942_0 is one of many folders. Find the one that contains "mpc-hc.exe" or the name of the exe you are using and delete the subsequent hex folder. I already deleted mine so I can't tell you the exact folder name, it started with 7b......_0, but it could be anything.
After deleting the folder "Key" MPC sound should work now, (since the registry is real time when you edit it changes to the OS are instant.) Hope this helps.
Cheers!

Update: 07-Mar-2010,
I actually had to do this again because Vista tried controlling the audio level again. Here's the full registry path.
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Inter net Explorer\\LowRegistry\\Audio\\PolicyConfig\\Proper tyStore\\7bd5936a_0\\"
Click on the Key "Folder" 7bd5936a_0, inside look at the string value "(Default)" it should contain the following info.
{0.0.0.00000000}.{2986f787-648a-4afd-98bb-46ab1426f33f}|\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files (x86)\K-Lite Codec Pack\Media Player Classic\mpc-hc.exe%b{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Verify that it contains the proper executable you are trying to fix the audio for, i.e. "mpc-hc..exe" is the one I am trying to fix. If you've found the right one delete the hex coded folder, in this case I'm deleting "7bd5936a_0" and wala the sound works again for media player classic.
Note: This will work for any program that is having this type of audio problem, you just have to find the correct sub-key "folder" that contains the executable you are trying to fix, look in the (Default) string value for the executable in question. Vista is trying to control the audio level "settings" independent for each application rather then directly at the OS level as a single setting like XP did.
Cheers! Again,
