  1. I recently upgraded from XP Home (SP2) to Vista Home Premium. When I connect my Panny PV-GS400 via firewire to my computer, Vista recognizes that the camcorder has been connected but unsuccessfully searches for a driver to install. The camcorder shows up in device manager as an unknown device with no driver installed. As a result, I am unable to transfer video to my computer. Needless to say, it worked fine in XP. Any and all help/suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

I did. I thought I'd check here to see if anyone else had experienced this problem while I waited for Panasonic to respond.

The problem is that Vista will not even recognize the camcorder. As a result, no transfer/capture software will work (including WinDV which I tried).

    You need a Vista driver.

You should have checked with Panasonic BEFORE you upgraded.

Now all you can do is wait for Panasonic to provide a driver. if your model is not a current production model this could be a significant time. Or you can take Vista off your system or go dual boot and use XP when you need your Panny.

For a system with as long and extensive a beta as Vista, there is a long list of hardware and software which lacks compatibility - almost like Apple O/S upgrades.

  7. Problem Solved!

Thought I'd post back and let everyone know the outcome. As it turns out, I apparently fubarred my system over the weekend when I tried to install a bluetooth dongle. Whatever I did, it must have screwed up the firewire stack. I restored my system from an image I had made with Acronis TrueImage the day before, and everything---including the camcorder--is working fine now. The camcorder is recognized and running with Vista's native drivers.

  8. I am having the exact same problem with a Sony HDR-HC3 HD Camcorder. The camera is recognized by Vista (I have Vista Home Premium), but no driver is installed, and I cannot capture anything from the camera.

In my case I have installed a widcomm bluetooth stack on the machine, and I will check this tonight, but judging from seeing a bunch of similar appends to mine in other forums, I wonder if some version of Vista leave out certain classes of hardware drivers ....

My device manager shows a 1394 driver, and when the camera is connected via firewire, a Sony device, but the device does not have a driver loaded.

If I knew the generic device it could use, perhaps I could select it from the hardware list, and get the camera working ...
