hi im sure there has been many people ask these sorts of questions but im really pissed off, and feel like giving up so i apologies for my moans and stupid questions, but anyway heres goes.

ive been capturing VHS, and video 8 (camcorder tapes) onto my computer using a Winfast tv 2000xp card, i decided to use nero 7 and its vison 4 program to record the stuff. Im sort of short on hard drive space (about 40-50gb to play with) so i decided to capture using dvd template out of the options i could pick. anyway ive captured a fair few tapes, each one taking up about 4gb each idea ready to encode to dvd. view the footage on my computer im happy with the final result.

i decided to do a test and see what the quality was like once on dvd, so i burn a dvd and played it on my standalone dvd player, and was disappointed that i found it pixelate a lot as the camera moved, making the picture look shakey, so i checked the footage on the computer and u can see it a little but it doesnt show as much. so now im thinking what format do i capture in? i used these settings

    video mode PAL
    Aspect ratio to 4:3
    Size (X/Y) to 720x576 (ccir-601 d1)
    audio format in stereo

in video decives propeties option ive got it set at YUY2 output resolution 640x480 and frame rate 25.00.

anyone got any advice on where im going wrong or can point me in the right direction please

    many thanks
    rydan

To what format did you capture?
    Probably some kind of AVI?
If so, "so i burn a dvd " implies a conversion to MPG (along with resizing) to DVD resolution, and unless that's done with a good encoder, set at max allowed DVD bitrate (as hand camera video is often shaky, and fast pans & c that litterally eats bitrate, as you've discovered) it wont look good.
Best bet is to capture as DV video (but that's 13 GB/hour) then encode to DVD mpg (HCEnc is a good free alternative) and lastly author - many apps available, but TDA is one of the best offerings where features/ease of use-ratio is concerned.

i was using nero vision 4 to capture and i picked DVD cuz the quality i was happy with and the size of the files. the options i could pick from were avi,svcd,mpeg-2, nero digital.

the sentence u picked up on "so i burn a dvd", once id captured the VHS footage onto my computer in this "DVD" template i picked, i used nero vision again to add the video files to create a video dvd. from my basic understanding it has to encode the video files to a dvd format to be able to play on a standalone dvd player, is that conversion to a mpg ?

this dv video u meantion is not available in nero vision, is it available in HCEnc and TDA, r they both capturing programs ?

    thanks for the reply

No. There are 3 distinct processes here:
    1) Capture. You do that at the highest possible quality available. DV is the best option. Try VirtualDub (and have the Panasonic DV codec installed).
    2) Encoding to DVD mpg. HCEnc is a good free alternative, others (not free) are Canopus Procoder, or CCE.
    3) Author as Video DVD. This is where for example TDA comes into the picture.

Nero is in comparision with the above process crap.

Capture at 720x576 using Huffuv, this will create enormous files... Use them as source material for creating DVD's in Nero or preferably some other app. I'm not sure where the 640x480 you mentioned above is coming in but your resolution selection should always be 720x576.

It's been a while since i used it but if you're using Huffy UV the file size should be some where in the neighborhood of about 25 to 30 gigs per hour.

Yes you have to encode the video to MPEG, you can pretty much do what you want once you have the video captured. Anywhere from 1 hour per DVD to 7 hours. The one hour will give you the best quality, 7 hours is at very reduced resoltuon and bitrate.
