Greetings, videophiles. This is my first post here - please be gentle.

I'm having trouble getting complete sound sync when I convert AVIs to DVDs. At first I was using WinAVI and Nero, and the resulting disc could (sometimes) be played on my computer, but never on my DVD player (Samsung S-222). Then I did some reading here and found out those programs were crappy, so I switched to The Film Machine and ImgBurn. Now the DVDs don't work properly on my computer (they are slow and "juddery"), but I can play them on the DVD player.

The picture looks great and the sound is good. The only problem is that I keep getting a slight sound sync problem. It ranges anywhere from one to three seconds, so the DVDs are watchable, but annoying.

I'm sure you've addressed this before, but I've tried searching through the forums here and haven't found the exact answers I need. I'd be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks!

Thanks, guns1inger. I'm working on 2 avis. This worked for one, but I'm still having problems with the other.

The sound is fine throughout the avi. I did a scan on virtualdubmod and there are no frame problems. I checked the audio and it's a CBR, not a VBR, so that's not the problem. The only thing I can think of is that it's a 3+ hour movie I'm trying to convert to a single DVD. Could that be throwing the sound sync off, or could it be something else?

    Thanks!

    Gee, thanks. That's helpful.

    Any more specific thoughts? Thanks!

Did you try to join the AVIs before converting? That's a big Don't.
Try Convertx2dvd (or even better - get a DVD player that also plays DivX/XviD AVI)

Hi. Nope, I just converted one AVI.

Hmm. Since I bought WinAVI and it turned out to be a dog, I was hoping to be able to do this with freeware. I suppose I could try it with Convertx2dvd and then buy it if it works...

We're considering buying a DVD player that plays other formats, but we're a bit tight on $ right now.

Well, those allinone AVI to DVD converters tend to cost around the same as an AVI capable DVD player, so I see no reason at all for going the software route. Same cost, much less work, time and trouble - The hardware solution wins hands down.

Split the AVI up into several parts. See if the problem still occurs, or happens only on certain MPGs.

Hmm. I'll try splitting things up. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll just wait until I have the funds to get a new player. I see the Lite On recorder/DivX players are on sale at Best Buy for under $100...

I had no idea this was going to be such a pain in the butt. Thanks for your advice!

Well, you can have the Philips DVP642 for $49.99 - A little old, but quite capable player.
