    Hello,

I've been burning DVDs with my Benq DW1620 since March 2005. Couple of months ago, my DVDdecrypter started to freeze when the disc finalizes or at 100%. I ended the process(Ctrl+Alt+Del) and the software closed but the drive kept on running and I have to manually shut down the PC. This happened gradually, meaning sometimes I get bad burns, sometimes not until eventually it became permanent.
I tried burning with my older drive LG (up to 4x only) and everything worked out normally.
Could this be a sign for replacing a damaged burner? or could I still salvage it?

Another question, all my blank DVDs are 16x, is it ok to burn in a 4x drive? would it be the same quality?

    Thanks for your valuable time.

What brand of dvd media are you using? Try using IMGBURN to burn your discs with the 1620. If that fails then it's time to buy a new dvd burner. The author of DVD DECRYPTER & IMGBURN is the same person named, LightningUK.

If those 16x discs burn okay in your LG burner then that would be fine. Most dvd media speeds are up to 16x speed so you should be fine with burning at 4x speed.

    Budz,

I use a variety of name brands Maxell, Philips and Fujifilm and all of them are DVD+R. I'll try IMGBURN and see what happens.

By the way, I guess using a DVD player lens cleaner will work with a DVD drive, no?

    Thanks for your advice.

Another suggestion is to try using VERBATIM dvd media. If that fails as well then it's time to bite the bullet and buy a new dvd burner.

You might check the appropriate forum for BenQ users on www.cdfreaks.com to see if there is a lubrication procedure for your writer. Its possible the laser is getting hung up at the outer edges of the disk.

LG drives have been known to require lubricaton after a period of heavy use and show similar problems,

Its unlikley you are having media problems of this type.

Benq drives can be picky when it comes to dvd media although you have the tool QSUITE 2.1 that can tweak your burns for lower grade dvd media.

MAXELL, FUJIFILM & PHILIPS dvd media are usually manufactured by RITEK which isn't t the best quality dvd media. As I mentioned before try using VERBATIM DVD+R media.
