If i used a 9.4gb dvd-r instead of the 4.7gb ones, could i just rip the dvd to the hard drive and the burn it straight to the dvd since there would be enough space to save me from all that encoding and stuff to make it fit.

yep that would be possible....but there are no 9.4 dual layer dvd-rs(dvd9) only 9.4 dual sided and then you have to split and burn on both sides.
