All I wanna do is create a movie with Windows Movie Maker and then burn it on DVD with the best quality possible.

Windows Movie Maker can only save movies as .wmv. I tried converting this wmv to DVD with Cyberlink PowerProducer 2 Gold, but the result was bad (Where I had stable images in my video the quality is really bad on dvd!).

So what is the best way to do this?
    • Can I convert wmv to divx avi and then use CCE etc? (what's the BEST proggie to do this?)

Can I make Windows Movie Maker save as .avi video? (how?)

Is there a REALLY GOOD wmv to mpv encoder?

Windows Movie Maker will also save your files as DV-avi, which is what you should use if you want to then produce DVDs.

  3. Windows Movie Make will capture DV .avi but only from a digital camcorder.
So if that is your source, no problem.
For anything else (like the capture card that came with my HP Media Center PC) it will only capture with .wmv. So for example if you wanted to convert a VHS tape you would have to capture in .wmv.
At least with my computer (which came bundled with Sonic MyDVD) there is the option in Windows Movie Maker under Finish movie to "save to DVD." But unless you pony up money for the AC3 upgrade the basic Sonic MyDVD will used uncompressed audio (PCM) and encode at some ridiculously high bitrate so that you can only get one hour on the DVD. Microsoft and the computer maker are in effect tying you into using their software.
If you absolutely have to capture to .wmv (as I had to, to capture a PAL VHS using my capture card), at its highest quality setting (about 2mbps constant bit rate) the WMV codec is as good as any mpeg4-type codec. Procoder 2 will accept it for conversion to mpeg, and then you can use a decent DVD authoring program. I believe Microsoft has available free Video for Windows codecs, so you could enstall those and then open the file in Virtual Dub and frameserve to other mpeg encoding programs as well.

It will output DV-avi from any source when you save your file after editing. I wouldn't use it to capture even DV, but that is a different issue.

  5. Yes you can output at the end to DVI also.
My only point was that if you've captured in .wmv, you should use that wmv capture for conversion to mpeg rather than convert .wmv to dv avi. and then dv avi to mpeg. You're gaining nothing quality wise by expanding it to DV (and are probably losing something by adding a conversion step.)
I agree that Windows Movie Maker's only virtue is that it is free, and that's not much!

  6. TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress will turn WMV (and a bunch of other formats) into DVD-compliant MPG2 streams; haven't played with this version myself but they're known for a pretty darn good converter. $99 to buy, dunno if they have a limited-time demo.

You would still have to author with something else, but there are many fine tools to choose from on the left!

Windows Movie Maker works great...Capture at the highest quality setting.(many Gig ..13 for 1hr.)...SAVE as a dv-avi file....( I think it's save to view on computer??)....
Then use any program...IE: ULEAD Movie Maker to burn to DVD....It will import the file and .........there you go...........

There are plenty of good (and free) apps that'll capture to DV-AVI just fine. These can be EASILY imported into WMM (whether Type1 or Type2).

    Edit in WMM.

Save/Export as DV-AVI type1. (Convert to Type2 with DVDate if you need that type for the next section)

Encode to MPEG2 using your high quality encoder of choice.

Author to DVD using your high quality authoring app of choice. Burn. Done.

    Doesn't get too much easier.

(BTW, why would anybody want to capture to WMV directly? Must not care about the longevity of the show...)

WMM has cleverly 'hidden' the DV output option. Click 'Save Movie file' and then 'My computer', then 'Next'. After you click 'Next', you will be offered some options in 'Other settings'. Select 'DV-AVI (NTSC)(or PAL) to save to your hard drive. Then take that file and encode with most any encoder to DVD format, author and burn. No WMV involved.
