Purchased a XMS-388 DVD player at Strathfield in Sydney, checked it worked, jumped on a plane to Auckland, pluged it in and no colour. Went right thru the settings and they are as expected - composite video, pal, interlace.
Suspect TV, but their VCR produces colour thru the same inputs.
Works thru VGA monitor (also has vga port).
Any suggestions?

Checked the DVD player in another NZ TV and it works fine. Tried anoter DVD player with the TV in question and it didn't work.
So the quesiton is, why would a TV display colour from a VCR but not a DVD player?Have a nice Day -
Are you actually playing a DVD or just getting to the DVD player default start up screen?
Many cheapo DVD players in Australia will automatically output in either PAL or NTSC depending on the playback content but the DEFAULT "on" screen is in NTSC.
If you have a TV that doesn't understand NTSC then you will get the B&W.

Hi Michael, we have checked the settings carefully to see that it isn't set to NTSC or Auto, it is definently set to PAL.
We played a pal zone 4 NZ purchased DVD on both the AU DVD player and the NZ DVD player.
So I'm stumped why VHS produces colour and not DVD.
PS I hear the weather a bit yuck in Sydney at the moment. Should be clear for me to ride over the bridge on Tuesday.
Cheers, Michael.Have a nice Day -
Pretty bad weather yesterday but today... clear sunny skies (in Wollongong anyway).

Could it be that you send out S-video and the tv can't handle that? If soo then you get the same symptoms even if it is set to PAL.

New Zealanders see different colours to Australians. They see in ultraviolet, 'cos they're closer to the Ozone Hole. Whereas Australians see in infra-red.

They have decided to buy a new TV. Being pensioners, this is a significant cost and I suppect that purchase my end up being delayed.
They have decided to have it pluged directly into the existing TV and use it with a Black and White picture until they purchase a new TV, as this will encourage them to get a new TV. I will fuel that desire by regularly sending DVD's of their grandchildren.
Interesting to note, the DVD player has a VGA port and I pluged it into a 14in VGA CRT monitor. The result was quite impressive, why acknowledging the small size of the picture, its crystal clear flicker free picture was very impressive. I can really see why people pay real $$$ for progressive TV's.Have a nice Day -
?? Try it on a large LCD monitor or CRT monitor.

hello,
I've had the same problem.
I also got an XMS 388 and it worked fine on my CHinese-made TV (VUE) but when I want to use it on the ol' Palsonic it is in Black and White. I used another chinese DVD player (Linkman) on the Palsonic and it worked fine.
What's the go?
I've tried all the suggestions and just can't get any colour. Changing the PAL/NTSC/AUTO settings etc.
Any other suggestions? -
In my case, we tried another DVD player on the same TV. For whatever reason, the TV would display VHS tapes in colour, but not DVD players.
