  1. Sorry for what may sound like a dumb question, but if a player is "DivX certified," does that mean it will also play Xvid and other AVIs as well?

    Thanks,

    Most xvids should work fine.

But not other avi files. AVI is a container format and can contain wmv, dv-avi, etc and that does not most divx dvd players support.

  3. Many thanks, Baldrick... thought that was the case, but wasn't sure. And, since I just recently learned about container formats, should have remembered that about AVIs.

    Appreciate your help,

Certain features can be problematic and it seems that Xvid users have a stronger tendency to use these features than Divx users. Qpel (quarter pixel) and GMC are the most problematic. I've read that GMC with 1 warp point may work, but Xvid usually has 3 and that is often a problem. More recent chips that support Divx are less fussy about such matters.

I should note that there are a few players out there that apparently only play DivX videos - they look at the FourCC of the AVI and only play the DivX variants, not Xvid. But, that's easily circumvented by changing the Xvid FourCCs to one used by DivX.
