Hi, everyone, I'm kind of a newbie to all this stuff, so bare with me please.

I live in the UK and I like to burn DivX/Xvid movies onto 'data' discs, so I have 4/5 movies on the one disc, its just a lot more easier than encoding and authoring my own DVD's, plus I'm lazy. Recently my DVD packed in so I'm looking to buy a new one.

I am looking to get a DVD player that can play such discs with several DivX/Xvid movies on them. Is there a particular make of player? Or any specific player that does the job? Preferably one that is available in the UK.

All relevant advice is welcome. Thanks.

there are loads now, just look in your local curry's. But Pixmania.com have a couple of biostek players that play divX for around £20. the XS-250 pro £19 and th XS360 for £25. I have not tried them though, maybe have a look on here to see if they've been reviewed, and I've never bought from pixmania either. There are a lot about these days though, so have a look.

Edit. you could do a search on here as well, go to dvd players at the left hand side and check the divx box then do a search, then you could try tracking down one of the resulting players.

LG DK141, DK142, DK172 here about 30 Euro / Models works fine. AKIRA MC-1280DVD Portable (.ru distrib have the specifiacation cause akira.my somehow don't give them out) I did buy before about 25 EUR.
Playable DivX file .avi, .mpg, .mpeg
Playable Subtitle formats: SubRip, SAMI, SubstationAlpha, MicroDVD, SubViewer 2.0, TMPlayer, DVD Subtitle system, VobSub
    Playable Codec: DIVX3.xx, DIVX4.xx, DIVX5.xx, XVID, MP43, 3IVX
    DIVX(R) VOB
Newer FANTASIA etc.. (between I don't find the Export Name of this Label).

My Question is what is the best program with instruction to copy DVD to XVID by highest quality apendent to the CD-R storage size (700MB) ?
older Versions of DVDFab did the job but since v3 anyway I don't get hardware player compatible xvid by doing the right settings for the output.
All these Players shows up incompatible or unknown video just the audio works. Reverse to older version of the same soft did the job successful. I looking for alternative software solutions.
Im a newbie with movie burning to DVD to xvid divx mp4.
I just read the LG can do switching subtitles by DivX

Avoid Qpel (Quarter pixel) and MMC when encoding to Divx. Many DVD players that support Divx don't like these. My experience is that "packed bitstream" is OK, but some players are reported to not like this too. Using something like a "home theatre" setting when encoding should help you to encode and have the best chance of playing it back. Subtitle support is limited and I'm not aware of any players that support SubRip format, which means you'll have to convert any SubRip subtitles to text. SRT generally works best, but a few others are usually supported. Expect subtitle support for alphabets other than Latin and Cyrillic to be non-existent for Divx playback for the most part.

Your decision to jam 4 or 5 movies to one DVD will put serious quality limits on your files. If I encode to Divx, I prefer bit rates of 2000 or higher, but this takes up more space.

Got the Biostek XS360 today and it works a treat. its played any disc I've thrown at it. Plays my xvid/divx files fine as well. haven't got a chance to try it out on the big tv screen with surround sound, only on a small screen, but picture and sound are brilliant on that. very pleased with the player. Only issue with it is the usb connection.

i put a few avi's on my usb pen drive and put it in the player, however it doesn't find them, only plays a couple of mp3s in another folder on the pen drive. on pixmania.com a guy has left a review for the same player and says it played his avi on his pen drive without any problems. any ideas what the problem is? firmware? i'm too sure what exactly updating the firmware would do.

EDIT: Problem solved, the usb pen drive was stuffed with work files, so i wasn't able to change modes (sound/picture/video) as the player was sorta frozen. So i cleared the pen drive and put a few mp3s, jpegs and avi's on it. Worked perfectly, was able to change modes to look at all the files.

So all in all, very happy with the player, would recommend it to anyone. Thanks again guys.

Hey all, sorry to dig up a post like this but i'm at the end of my wits with this player, I have just recieved it and all it has played so far is a cdr with 1 divx movie on it, it hasn't touched a dvdr with divx on it and wont play multi-region DVDs.

I have looked all over for firmware which might improve the situation and it came from pixmania.co.uk I have also sent 2 emails, one to pixmania and one to the maker which is Biostek the model number is XS-360C

What does it say for the disks it refuses to play?
Are there any differences between the file(s) that do play, compared to those that don't?

  11. I don't know that player in particular but here are some general guidelines:

Be sure you don't use multisession when you burn your DVDs. With DVDs the temptation is to burn a few videos today, then add a few more next week, etc. But most players have problems with multiession disks. Burn without multisession and make sure the discs are finalized (no more writing possible).

Try both ISO and UDF format. Some players only work with one or the other.

Wow! Thank you so much for the replies fellas.

Honestly this is the 2nd DIVX dvd player I have now and I have had loads in the past but this one just says WRONG DISC whenever I enter a DVDR with movies on it, I always burn 6 at a time too so I close the disc from further burning always, I don't like burning more later.

The files i'm playing are generally xvid, possibly some divx, but my eltax cheapy dvd player plays them all fine and this player isnt for me, its for a friend as a favor so im trying to get it sorted out before the night pops up.

Anymore suggestions? I did go to their main website and it has firmware but im not sure if i can use it on my player?

    http://biostek.info

edit: also it doesnt play any region apart from 2 for some reason, the reviews on pixmania.co.uk both said it works amazingly and gave it 10 out of 10?

Some players refuse to face the fact that there is such a thing as a data DVD, and expects every inserted DVD media to have a Video DVD structure. Maybe the Biostek is one of those beasts? If a file plays fine when burned as data to CD-R but not to DVD-R, that's probably a fact.

Just bought the BIOSTEK XS360 based partly on the review here. I'm impressed! Good quality and simple controls - once you find them. I've just spent 2 hours trying to make it recognise a memory stick in the USB socket only to find that there's a DVD/USB button on the remote! I think I was dropped on the head as a child

Most of what I watch is downloaded and the USB means that I will only need to burn discs for "keepers" now. That WILL be nice.

Oh and my first thought was ebay to get one but a bit of Googleing found a retailer 50% cheaper than that. I'm new here and don't know if I'm allowed to name them, let me know if I should.
