    Hi Guys,

I have a couple laptops that have VGA-out but no S-video out (one is a Thinkpad T60P and the other is a Vaio TR5AP). I was wondering what the best solution is for converting the VGA to S-video for various TVs (one is a CRT and the other is a 32" LCD-HD). I have tried a straight up wire with VGA on one end and S-video on the other but that didn't seem to work at all. I found this:

but that site seems sort of shady and it's expensive although I would pay it if I was sure it would work. Are there better and/or cheaper alternatives? Will the product in the link above do what I need it to do? Thanks guys, I'm kind of lost and really appreciate the help!

  2. Many companies make VGA to s-video scan converters. Quality varies. In no case will you get computer monitor quality out of s-video. If you're laptops run 1024x768 you'll barely be able to read anything on the screen.

I'm really just using this for video I don't care about being able to read the text. Based on the google results you linked to the one I found ($56 shipped) actually looks pretty good now. Does anyone have actual experience using this converter or a similar one and can therefore suggest a good product? Thanks again.

Anyone have any ideas? I've searched and can't find specific info regarding this type of conversion...

  5. I had one of these many years ago (technologically speaking), I used ot to hook my laptop up to my TV and show crude slide shows.

They work OK, but are unremarkable.

About the only thing to be concerned with is if the aspect of the TV will crop out the display any but as I recall the one I had could comensate for that. Also, they tend to flicker but again mine had flicker reduction in software that blurred the image a bit but not too badly.

I would say the one you originally came across is probably fine. Another place to check is Tiger Direct.

    Enjoy.
