I am trying to find a good quality codec that also has small file sizes for web video. I have looked into these Mpeg-4 based codecs. Are they a good choice? And which one is "better"?

H.264 is better than both that you listed -- though for web video I would go with On2 flash compression (Macromedia Flash 8 )

yes but I heard that h.264 requires lots of CPU and most people don't have that codec installed. Right or wrong?

Oh yes I forgot to mention excluding flash. The particular website I am talking about is blip.tv and it already converts your video to Flash but unlike youtube, a user can download the source video too. I am looking for a good codec for the source video that I will mostly be converting NTSC DV interlaced footage.

if they have the latest version of QT , they sort of have H264 if it is in a QT container - which is an option for you ....

    but ----

most people will not have 3ivx installed - in fact most people do not have even divx installed if you are talking about the masses ...

mpeg1 is still the most compatable , followed by either wmv 8 or 9 and/or Quicktime Sorenson3 or (better) qt 264 ...

i would go with WMV in your case if you do not want to offer downloaded video in the flash8 format ....
