  1. Hey I need to replace my Epson Perfection 2480. Im thinking about buying either

    URL Canon 4400F

    Or
    URL Epson V350

Does anyone have either of these scanners? My price range is between 100 to 150 bucks. If you have another one to suggest please feel free. Does anyone know of the 2 which would be better for scanning Photos? I scan text every so often but not that much. I believe they both scan film negatives as well

The canon listed , after checking spec's and driver support is the better of the two listed ... epson's do have a bad habit of wanting to warm up all the time between batch's .

If it weren't for the excellent price ($39 shipped) and filmstrip scanning: I'd still be running a Canon Lide30 - no warmup waits, better quality scans, portability. I still have days when I think of switching back.

  7. I have a Canon LIDE 500F. The dust and scratch removal called "FARE", does not work very well. This is because it is software based. Look for a scanner that has Digital ICE. This is partially hardware based, and uses an infrared light while scanning. This allows the scanner to clean up dust and scratches without taking detail away.

I haven't used my 500F on many photos, because of the bad job FARE does with dust and scratches. Also, if you have any slides or negatives to scan, you may want to purchase a seperate dedicated 35mm scanner. I bought a Minolta DiMAGE 5400, and it scans slides/negs much better than any current flatbed. The flatbeds that have the feature to scan slides are a joke.

I can't resist punishing Epson further. They dumped a load of Perfection 636U (USB) scanners on the public very close to the introduction of XP. I bought one for myself and as gifts for others due to success with the my similar Perfection 1200U.

Short story, they never supplied an XP driver for that model !!!! Actually they refused to even after customer complaint.

As a result I had to buy a couple of new scanners (not Epson) as replacement gifts. Mine had to live on a win98se machine to work.

I've never purchased another Epson product since and thought you should know the company you are dealing with. We elephants have long memory.

PS: In case Google missed the key words for that model, here are some more Epson Perfection 636U Model G680B Made in Singapore FCC ID BKMFBG680B
