What Is the difference between using a program like dvd decrypter or smart ripper, to rip a dvd to the HD, and using a program like dvd shrink, or Nero Recode, to copy the files to the HD instead of a disc? I seem to have bad luck playing back movies I've ripped with smart ripper, or dvd decrypter. I start power dvd, select play movie from HD, and it won't play back, why? Thanks.

Nero Recode won't rip commercial discs.
DVD Shrink and VD Decrypter both have issues ripping newer discs (anything a year old or less) if they have ArCoSS protection. I suspect SmartRipper is in the same boat.
RipIt4Me uses DVD Decrypter, FixVTS and DVD Shrink to rip movies to your HDD by ripping around the structure protection, then repairing the damage left behind. Other alternatives are AnyDVD and DVD Fab Decrypter, if you keep them updated.
All of this is covered ad nauseum, if you care to search.Read my blog here.
