Ok this is a strange one and i can not figure it out. Now mind you this is all on a fresh windows install.

The first thing i did on the fresh windows install was to go directly to the manafactues sites (nvidia and sound blaster) and download the newest possiable video and audio drivers.

Then i went and downloaded the K-Lite full codec pack.

Now i have tried play many differnt .avi xvid movie's in Windows media player, winamp, media player classic, VLC. Everyone one of these applications "freeze" when i tried to play the files. They shoot up to 100% Cpu usage and stay that way until i have to terminate the application. I ran the the .avi's through gspot and it says i have all the needed codecs yet when i try to render it locks up just like the players.

    My PC specs are
    Amd 64 3200
    786mb ram
nvidia geforce 6600 gt 128mb AGP
    1x40gb 2x300gb

    First mistake.

Codec packs are notorious for putting out of date, conflicting and poorly configured codecs into your system. As well as codecs you don't even need. They are bad news.

Before spending too much more time, because this is a fresh windows install anyway, I would nuke it, reinstall windows, then just install VLC and try to play the video. It doesn't need any cdecs installed, and will tell you if the issue is driver related, rather than codec related.

    You were doing fine till,
Then i went and downloaded the K-Lite full codec pack.

That would be the primary suspect for causing your problems. There are many posts here about damages from K-lite. It should not have affected VLC, though as it uses it's own codecs. I would uninstall it and never let it near your computer again.

Then install the Xvid codec and from now on install only needed codecs. Gspot will tell you which ones you need when you try to play a new video.

EDIT: guns1inger typed faster. Sometimes you you get lucky and K-lite doesn't cause major damage, but that's rare.

Let's see. A quick forum seach for K-lite comes up:

I doubt if any but a very few were not about problems.
