Just got a 26" HDTV and a Sony DVD player (prog scan) with HDMI connection. The player also has upscaling technology.

Having connected it up, I have noticed that the DVD quality is worse than with my original CRTV and non progressive DVD player. Why is this happening?

Fortunately, the TV has PC input. If I play the DVD's through my pc they look fine.

WHy do they look worse on my DVD player than they do on my PC?

Any ideas? Could it be the HDMI cable i bought was rubbish? Or could it be that the DVD player itself is rubbish?

Did you check the players menu to verify it's set for the correct output?

Many folks have found the component outputs produce a better picture.

HDMI has been produced for one reason only IMO.

To introduce High Definition Content Protection.

In the UK the Copyright owners are trying to force the makers of SKY HD boxes to only produce boxes with HDMI outputs.

Currently I believe they have HDMI and component.

I would always try to wire up via component if you have the choice.

Also your TV has to upscale the image anyway as the native resolution of the TV will be higher than that of the DVD.

Upscaling DVD players are a manufacturer's gimick as they are not actually required as HDTV's have to upscale anyway.
