  1. Hey all i was wondering if someone here could help me i bought my DVP642 a couple years ago and i find that some xvids play but they are all weird looking and inverted almost and then when you press the Menu button on the remote and go back to the video its fixed and its annoying to have to do this to some videos i was wondering if there is any other permanent fix for it? Like firmware? I have 0531 firmware. I know i could just convert the files but thats a hassle to do it to over 26 files.

    Thanks!

Heres a video of what it looks like for reference:

At first i fast forward it to get into the file then it plays for a little bit then i do the menu trick to show you what im talking about.

Which is the new model? Is it better then the 642 also does it fix this problem?

    Thanks for the reply.

  5. There Is a few New Models out That play Divx and Xvid.

I think this has to do with how old the Player is and the use it gets.(I use Mine alot),My brother doesnt and hasent seen this problem,I think it has somthing to do with the laser.

The problem you describe is almost certainly due to the file being encoded using a custom quantization matrix. The DVP642's ESS chipset doesn't handle those well. Look here for a description of the problem:
    http://www.jarnot.com/twiki/bin/view/Public/DVP642LisaBsAVIGuide

It's in the "quant type" section" under "Diagnosing your AVI with MPEG4Modifier". The way I fixed them was to re-encode using Avi Recomp or AutoGK (with the ESS compatibility option).

The newer Philips models DVP5140 and DVP5960 use a different chipset (Mediatek) and do not have this problem. I've got a 5960 and am very happy with it. My previous player was the 642.

    Good luck.

YOu have to do that 2 times.

Try the dvd player section of this site, it has lots of things you can do with that player.
