does it play full screen on your computer?
Sometimes this machine has problems with divx files and you can hid the system menu button twice and snap it into a 'normal' picture. That's one thing you can try. The system menu button is directly to the right of the up arrow. I've never had a problem with vcd on this particular machine.
    Just the occasional divx file.

I have the DVP-642 and this is not at all how it plays VCDs. My best guess would be that you did not burn this to disc correctly. How did you burn it? Did you burn a data disc? That's wrong. You have to burn it as a VCD. Let us know what software you used to burn it and what format you burned it in. What brand of disc did you burn to?

    Cool, a new feature!

Are you using the new model/version or the original? (check the manufacture date)

  6. Hi all... I'm in a quandry here as my beloved DVP 642 has bit the dust after 3 long years of flawless use. I know some in the forum detest this model and don't recommend it, but it worked great for us....problem is, I cannot locate a new one anywhere. I can find refurbished models or "used" models, but have exhausted all places to shop that I could locate- Walmart (original purchase place), Best Buy, Target, Radio Shack, Sears, KMart- U name it, I looked there. Even went online to (gasp) EBAY and although did find the refurb models, I'm wondering if this is going to be my only option.

Please, if you know where this unit can be purchased from a reputable dealer (will take reurb if only available) could you PLEASE let me know? I miss my 642 what can I say???

  7. If you don't need s-video (ie, can use composite, component, or HDMI) consider a DVP-5960 or DVP-5982.

ufcdave - Please do yourself a favor and don't buy another one. Mine is over 3 years old and it's worked generally OK for me, but I don't recommend it, nor would I buy another one. Philips more recent models are all superior to this old unit and a few of them are in the same price range. The DVP-642 uses a very old chip for decoding Divx and it has long been surpassed by more recent decoding chips.

Do note that MANY people here have had horrific problems with their DVP-642 units and should you insist on buying another one, you may get one of the bad ones and end up wasting your money on it. If you buy a refurb and after 1 month it stops working correctly, well, you were warned.
If I had to buy a refurb, I'd try to get it through Amazon.com as I've bought refurb stuff that way and it turned out OK. I don't trust Ebay sellers as Ebay makes no attempt to police it's own website, so you could very easily end up with a unit that was sold to you knowingly in a defective state. Good luck getting your money back. The web is filled with horror stories about people who got ripped off via Ebay transactions and Ebay/PayPal did NOTHING AT ALL to help the ripped off party. In fact, it seems that Ebay/PayPal will almost always take the side of the dishonest person in any disputed transaction. I buy from Ebay, but my rule is that I don't spend any money I can't live without.

Finally, ufcdave you have hijacked a thread that was specific to a problem one user had with his DVP-642 and your post has nothing to do with that problem. Please do NOT do this again. You should have opened a new thread. It's not nice for you to have changed this thread away from solving the original poster's problem to a request for you to have help finding a DVP-642.
