    Hi!
Who could help me with the following???:

First I open Premiere Elements 1.0 and capture my DV video on .avi files.
--> This results in excellent quality avi files (all fine here!)

Then I edit it a bit with standard transitions and cut out some obsolete frames. To finish it off in Premiere Elements I render it completely
--> When looking at the preview in Premiere, all still looks quite ok (just a slight loss of quality)

THEN I save it to MPEG format (DVD/PAL)
--> All shots where the camcorder made some quick movements, show very irritating horizontal lines, however when the camcorder is "not moving" no lines are shown...

What can I do to prevent these horizontal lines!?!? Could it be the video card (even if the avi files created show a very high quality)?!?!?

I even tried it all with just a single track, all goes well, untill exporting it to a new file (MPEG, WMV, VOB all the same horizontal lines, WMV even more...).

    Looking forward to your feedback!
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

The line split is what you should want. PAL video sequentially sends half the lines as fields each 1/50 sec apart so you want to see field split on your raw computer display if you want to see smooth motion on your TV.

A computer display is progressive and by default shows two half frames overlayed. To make it look better on the computer, use a deinterlacing player like PowerDVD, WinDVD or the free VLC.

Most DVD players, DVD writers or new computers usually bundle a deinterlacing player for this reason.

You didn't say how you are looking at the MPEG files...

If on computer, and with Premiere or WMP or some other standard media player, you probably are see it through a BAD deinterlacer (or none).

What happens when you make a DVD title, burn it to disc, and play it on a settop to a TV?

If it looks OK then, don't worry about it, just get a good player app for your computer (WinDVD, PowerDVD, VLC, etc).

Otherwise, you're going to have to go into more detail about your conversion settings, system setup, etc.

Thanks for your quick reply. I am sorry, but you have to understand that I am a bit of a rookie concerning this... Can I activate such a line split somewhere?

Thanks again for another swift reply!

On my computer I am indeed looking at the MPEG files through WMP, I will try it through WinDVD (I think I have is somewhere) and let you know what happened.

However on my TV I tried two different options: played directly from my external hard-disk (conceptronic) and through a (economically priced samsung) DVD-recorder. Both again showing the horizontal lines...

Start with VLC to play the original file. Then play with the different deinterlacer settings (under video) to see how they work. Proper deinterlacing is much more complicated and depends on how you want to display the result. Progressive DVD players and HDTV sets have hardware deinterlacers built in. Quality varies.

Quick and dirty solution is drop half the fields but that results in half vertical resolution and jerky 1/25sec motion.

Played what? Try playing the DV format file. That should play smoothly.

If you export the Elements DV timeline to MPeg2 (lower field first interlace) at reasonable bitrate, it should look good on the TV.

If you deinterlaced to progressive MPeg2, then you need to tell us what you did.

I have the same exact problem as described, horizontal lines whenever there is quick motion on the video, otherwise smooth. This occurs on the end product as well. Tried using TMPG to encode as well as DVD Movie Factory. Anybody else seen this or found a cure to it?

There is no cure, as there is nothing wrong - it is called interlacing, and all broadcast shows have it, as do your DV tapes. If you can see them on your TV then you have done something wrong when encoding. Check your field order.

I have tried top field first and bottom field first, and I still get the lines when viewing the DVD on the TV. Using a Sony TRV22 camcorder if that makes a difference, but the captured .avi files look fine when I capture with Premiere.

I cured my problem, however I did not find the time yet to put in it one the forum yet...

What happened was quite a stupid mistake, I installed my elements with the American DVD format (NTSC), this format has more frames per second than the PAL format in which I saved my project (causing the horizontal lines in the output only...).

When I changed my Element upload settings to PAL, my problem got solved.

Now I got to re-upload my project again, and probably re-edit it all over again...

    Best regards,
    Chris
