do you guys know of any other good codecs similar to divx or wmv9vcm or xvid (which I'm not a big fan of)? I mostly use virtualdubmod to encode fitcd files (avs). Most of the time I use divx6 which is great, when I have problems with divx6 I use wmv9 vcm, which doesn't look as good, but does the job. xvid is similar to wmv9 in that aspect. Are there any high quality codecs I should get, that compress well like these?
Thanks guys.

For playing back on what? One of the factors to consider is the intended audience. Another is file size. I could suggest DV (that'd beat the living daylight out of any of those mentioned qualitywise) at the cost of 13 GB/hour.

For playback on a dvd player. The file would be burned on Nero express onto a regular dvd. Yeah I tried DV that's really huge lol

That pretty much limits your choices to XviD and DivX, unless you got a very special DVD player AFAICS...
