I have Hauppauge PVR2USB2 with hardware encoder.
I remember I used to get only 25-30% CPU usage for WinTV2000 to watch LiveTV, but recently it jumped up to 65-72%. I don't know exactly when it started to happen, but I recently replaced my my 6800GS with Leadtek 7600GT and used the supplied driver (91.47). Fyi, this is XP-SP1 system + Barton 3200+.

    I've checked everything.
    - HD using DMA properly
    - Hauppauge MPEG Decoder software (latest ver 5.0) installed correctly
    - Changed Primary to Overlay, Allow VMR (Use DXVA & HWMC),
    - Tried several NVidia drivers (84.21 WHQL, 91.32, 92.91)
    - Use latest driver

Nothing seems to help. VMR9 with DXVA & HWMC ON does not seem to help anything with the decoding in WinTV2000.
LiveTV or Recording still uses about the same CPU Usage.
From Hauppauge forum, I read that there must be something wrong during the decoding stage if CPU usage drops when the screen is paused during recording.

I tried the same procedure. When I paused recording (screen freeze & recording continues in background), CPU Usage will actually drop to 10-15%, which means there must be something wrong in the decoding stage, but I have no idea how or why this happens.

I tried reinstall everything from driver to Hauppauge applications, and still no help. Strangely it is still happening even after I reinstalled a fresh WinXP SP2. CPU Usage still very high around 65-75%.
I know for sure that the decoding should not tax my CPU that much. It should only be around 20-30% at most, like I used to get when I still used my 6800GS.

I tried to GBPVR, and it even uses 90% CPU for LiveTV, which is strange, because it used to be around 15-20%. Even with NVidia PureVideo decoder selected, GBPVR still uses 90%.
But when I run an MPEG2 file using WMP, and the CPU Usage is only around 30% (PureVideo Icon shows up & working properly).

What else should I do ? What is wrong with my system ?
How come suddenly the MPG decoding taxes my CPU so much ???

Could you please fill in you current pc details so we can help with the issue ...

Pausing recordings should drop cpu level's ... restarting the recording should rise once more .

You may want to use hijackthis http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php , and scan the system , and check all non-essential program's running in the background ... quicktime , printer utilities , messenger , ect ... and allow the program to fix those checked and restart the pc and try again .

Do not do anything else while recording ... it will cause problem's .

Did you install any video all-in-one codec packages from online ? ... get rid of them and reboot pc
Do you have ffdshow installed ... do the same thing as above .

Then we might actually get to the bottom of the problem .

    ----------------------

You may have also failed to notice the correct procedure of installing such capture device's when you did the clean reinstall .

You should have uninstalled all software and driver's related to the device , then shut down the pc , remove power cord , and remove the device before reinstalling the os ... otherwise problem's will appear .

The device itself should be the first pci device installed in any capture setup after os install , before any other , when setting up and trouble shooting .

    Agp onboard , agp slot , pci1 = share resource's , only one may be active .
    Pci2 / pci3 = share resource's , only one slot may be used .
    Pci4 / pci5 = same as above .

    ==============

Let's see how it gose ...

  3. Look to see if there's a Write Combining option in the Graphics card's configuration applet. Make sure it's enabled.

No Codecs is installed. Only Purevideo. Uninstalling Purevido, no improvement. I Tried to clean install SP1 without any software, except video driver, Hauppauge driver & applications. Same high CPU usage. I don't understand. Looking from the situation, it looks like the problem come from Hauppauge itself. From the beginning I've had problem with Hauppauge applications, where the scheduler causes WinTV2000 freeze when launched. Many people have experienced this same problem without any solution.
I think I've had enough with Hauppauge. I know I should have bought Leadtek PVR2000, which is much more stable in term of driver & its PVR applications.

The problem not with Hauppauge deivce but it maybe the intervideo mpeg decoder which come with PVR card when you switch from 6800GS to Leadtek 7600GT which the 7600 has been know not want to work rigth in kick in to video card hardware decoder asst mod with 3rdparty apps.
Did manuel setup the nVidia PureVideo decoder by using GraphEdit or Radlight Filter Manager in order to get Property Page it use what ever is default by 3rdparty apps unlike WMP which is hardcode to WMP that why you maybe see a diff CPU usage.
