I have a P3 600Mhz 256 MB, computer. Eveytime I try to watch a DVD or Xvid video file on full screen the
picture freezes every few seconds, because the CPU is at 100%. It's impossible to watch. Which video playing software has the lowest CPU ussage?
I've tried Windows Media Player, KMPlayer and VLC, all with the same result.

    P.S
Please don't reply with an advice to buy a new computer, unless you are willing to purchase one for me!!

    Thanks in advance.

    Try mplayer.

But DVD and some xvids should work pretty good with the players you have mentioned. What operating system are you running? Have you checked so no other process eats cpu?

    1.change screen resolution to 640x480 16 bit
2.disable all autoloading programs which are not needed
    3.divx-disable post processing

    - I'm running Win XP SP2.
    - I have nothing else running but Avast anti virus.
    - Already changed resolution. Doesn't help.
    - Does Mplayer support subs?
    Thanks.

Your current PC should be fast enough for DVD playback, at least in a window anyway. Full screen would be questionable without a video card with hardware mpeg2 support.

You also list two different amounts of RAM. Your first post lists 256MB and your computer specs list 512MB. If you do only have 256MB, then that is also likely contributing to your issue. XP needs a minimum of 512MB for proper operation without hitting the swapfile continously.

Use task manager to monitor your cpu usage and watch your HDD LED while playing a DVD to see if there is excessive HDD usage.

  9. Hahahaha. If he still has that pentium3, 5 years later, we should all pitch in and buy him a pentium4, so he can watch all of his out dated divx encodes.
