I have been searching the forums, and as many times as the question "which is the best DVD writer" has been asked, I cannot find any current advice for a DVD reader.

My problem is that I own and also encounter too many dvds that are scratched and/or abused. So, my primairly goal is to get recommendations for the best devices for reading trouble media. My NEC writers do a poor job reading scratched media that I need a better solution for reading these dvds on my HTPC.

Could anyone recommend a DVD drive (reader or writer) that does an exceptional job reading scratched dvd movie discs? Thanks.

Lordsmurf, I would be particularly interested if you had any input.
    UPDATE:
I have found a few recommendations that seem outdated.
I am just looking for subjective advice as to what to buy to read discs with scratched.

Not answering your question, but use Brasso to polish off scratches.

All drives do not read equally well: I have one that reads discs when others won't: Panasonic LFD-521 Old, 2X, DVD Multi-Drive.

It's housed in an external enclosure for quick use, it's been superceded in my primary machine, as it was never a great writer.

  5. I had a similar problem with the kids scratching dvds. I ended up trying 1clickdvd copy and had perfect results. One of it's claims is that it repairs/reads scratched disks. This software worked when dvd shrink, dvd decrypter, dvd fabdecrypter and anydvd/clone dvd failed. Try the free trial on your worst disks and see if it works.
