The only way I can think of would be via the external HDD in an enclosure with a Firewire/iLink or USB output to a DVD recorder having either of those types of inputs. Some Pioneer, Sony, and LG models have had Firewire but I don't know about USB; perhaps the Philips ? The section for DVD Recorders on this website can help you to identify particular models. For an external enclosure with Firewire, I found only one at Newegg, but that's the only place I looked.

Thx wtsinnc, but it's not that simple. I'm well aware of external cases housing hard drives and various dvd recorders with usb input. They do need read dvix, avi, mpeg4 files. At least not to my knowledge. I do not know of any model that has this capability.
Unless there is someone who does? Please advise. -

Here is a direct link to the product page for the Philips DVDR3576H/37 DVD recorder. This is the current model with a 160gb hard drive and both Firewire and USB inputs. Near the bottom of the page is a link to download the user manual; it should tell you if this will suit your needs. There is also a model (DVDR3506/37) without an internal HDD.

According to the manual, and my own tests, the Philips 3576's USB port will only play back WMA or MP3 audio, or jpegs.
I tried a thumb drive of divx/mp3 AVIs in the USB port of the 3576 and got a message "Unknown USB Device/File. Insert compatible USB with supported file type. Please refer to the Manual for details."
I copied some JPGs and MP3s to the same thumb drive and they worked fine in the 3576.
These same avi files on the same drive played OK through my Philips 5990 player's USB port.
Even if it did work through the 3576, though, I'd still play them back through the 5990 since I'd rather wear out a $60 player than a $250 recorder; of course USB playback wouldn't put much wear on a machine since no parts are moving. -
Hey guys, I actually own the 3576. Yes, I get "UNKNOWN USB DEVICE...." Hmmm, I might have to just buy the 5990. The PS3 was what I was using, but I'm falling out of love with it and thinking of returning it.
Squash, how's the subtitles? Does it display it properly on th 5990? -
siratfus,
The subs work fine. There are a couple of threads in the Players section about the 5990:

https://forum.videohelp.com/topic349792.html
Any references to the 5992 model also apply to the 5990.
And there's a good modded firmware that offers, among other things, a choice of white or yellow subs, as well as different sizes of sub fonts, versus the standard firmware's white, one-size-only:
