  1. Hi all.

I haven't done much in the way of burning AVI files to DVD, however I just put together a small video in Premiere, saved it as an AVI file, and now I want to burn it to DVD. Looking through the software I already have, Nero Vision is the only DVD authoring software I have currently, so I imported my edited DV-AVI file and ran a test burn through Nero Vision (after first making sure that the quality setting and encoding mode were both set to "high quality"). After viewing a portion of the disc on a TV, I must say that I'm not too impressed with the video quality. It looks fairly noisy (almost like there are blocks of noise throughout the video), and blurriness around edges appears to be rather prominent.

That said, can anyone recommend a decent application for burning DV-AVI files to DVD which does a decent transcode and delivers really good video on DVD? Also, are there perhaps any freeware programs available that would be worth trying?

    Thanks!

You need to encode your AVI to a MPEG-2 DVD spec video and audio file first THEN you use a DVD Authoring program.

For freeware software there is AviSynth and VirtualDubMod which work as a good "front end" to the encoder of your choice. One of the best freeware MPEG-2 encoders is HCenc but some people also like QuEnc and ffmpeg.

What can you tell us about the AVI file you want to convert? For instance what is the frame size, the frame rate, the audio format and is it progressive or interlaced, etc.

You might want to load the AVI into GSpot then post a picture here of what GSpot shows.

These can also render compliant avi to DVD Mpeg2. (tho none freeware)
    TMPGEnc Express.
    Womble Mpeg Video Wizard DVD.
As far as authoring, TMPGEnc DVD Author is a nice one.

Also ConvertXtoDvd works fine, for a nice "all in one" solution.

Ulead Movie Factory or for more options it's big brother DVD Workshop. Both will accept practically any foramt and since they use a version of mainconcepts encoder both produce decent results.

    I don't get that.

Do you need to use AVISYNTH when encoding your AVIs with say a program like CCE?

I have made a few DVDs that seem to come out fine with CCE encoding the AVIs without using AVISYNTH. What exactly does AVISYNTH do and is it necessary?

    Cheers!

Well if we are talking MPEG-4 AVI files like XviD and DivX then the resolution can be just about anything so it is best to resize with AviSynth before feeding it to CCE and FitCD is a program that makes the resizing very easy for you to do so that 1.) you keep a proper aspect ratio and 2.) it creates an AviSynth script for you.

Avisynth is used a powerfull, non-GUI Frameserver.
It has the ability to use an vast amount of filters & fixes to play with.
As FulciLives says, it can use FitCD to do some of your basic work too.

Little bit of a learning curve...But may be well worth your time looking into it.
