I tried (twice) to convert an avi, first to iPod mpeg 4 480w, then to iPod H 264. In each case I got a mov file that plays fine except there's no sound. I also got a wav file which won't even play, at least, not by simply double-clicking the icon. I tried transferring the mov files to the iPod (the 30 GB one) but it's the same there -- no sound. I checked to see that Encode Audio was checked -- it is. Is there some simple thing I'm missing?

yes, its the audio codec needed to decode the audio in the .avi.
Please, if the .avi will play both the video and audio in Quicktime,
perform a cmd-i ( apple key - i) and post back the infomation
on what the audio and video codecs are being used to
    properly play the file.

Depending upon what it the codecs are, we can transcode the file
into something friendly that wil then go nicely into an mpeg-4
    for the iPod....

When I have it open in VLC I get the following information when I do command-i:

Stream 0 Codec XVID Type Video
Stream 1 Codec mpga Type Audio

Does this give the necessary information?

I think the problem solved itself. When I checked again, one of the two videos I tried it on had the two files combined into one. then, as an experimetn, I tried a very, very short avi. The FF Progress window quicly ran up to 200% and then, after a short delay, it rang a little bell and changed from 200% to Finished. And it played fine. I guess the former procedure either took too long to combine the audio and video files or maybe the software crashed and I hadn't noticed. Thanks for tyring to help, anyway, and please excure my ignorance.
