  1. I reinstalled Windows XP + SP2 and updated the drivers for all unknown devices. The only one not functioning properly is my Broadcom 4318 wireless device. I had some old drivers backed up via Driver Guide 1.6, which I used and installed the device correctly:

The device was working properly before the reinstall. Now, no matter where I am I cannot connect to the WAP, mine or my cousin's. I've tried updating the drivers via the compaq website but their links are down, so I grabbed an update from a mirrored site and attempted to update, which ran successful, but I still can't get a wireless signal.

    Any ideas?

Usually you would install the driver which should remove the colored question mark from the hardware listing in Device Manager meaning Windows is now satisfied the device will work.

Next would be to make sure Windows is going to manage your wireless connections. To do this you would either double-click on the little wifi icon in the system tray (beside the clock) or directly by right-clicking the wifi card in Connect To - Show All Connections and choose Properties. Double clicking the wifi icon brings up the Connections box then you would choose Wireless then Modify Wireless Preferences then the middle tab then enable "Let Windows manage your wireless connections". Windows would then scan for and allow you to connect to wireless systems.

It appears your device has the drivers installed so it must be that windows is setup to use a 3rd party connections management program. Just find the box that makes Windows manage your wifi connections and you should be ok. It's easy to find once you start looking.

    Good luck.

  3. An off-the-wall suggestion but...

...is this when running the laptop on its battery or when using the AC adapter.

I've come across a lot of Thinkpads with built-in wireless that, by default, don't connect when running on batteries. You have to go into the device settings for the wireless and adjust one of the power saving options.

I can't recall the exact setting but if you find this is true in your case, post back and I'll try to dig out the info.
