  1. Hi,

Since two weeks, I often have buffers drop out with Nero (that never occured before).
Sometimes its the nero buffer + dvd writer buffer, sometimes only the dvd writer buffer.

I burned a disc today and only the writer buffer has falled down for a fraction of second but I can see the drive led stop brighting than brigthing again in less than 1 second when the buffer is filled again.

My drive is in DMA mode.
I even try to update to the latest nero version but it's still here.

Note: The burned disc is perfectly readable when I do a read scan or when I play it on my standalone.

Here is a copy of Nero log:

Is a Windows problem or the drive will start failing ???

Check that the drive has DMA enabled.

Check that you do not have another program running at higher priority which is sucking up the CPU.

Check for spyware and viruses which may be sucking up the CPU.

    Check for hard disk fragmentation.

Perform a tune-up on your system.

Usage (buffer levels) vary depending on the types of data that you are burning. For example, it is harder for your pc to keep the buffers full when you are burning many small files as opposed to a few larger files. Since most newer drives have good buffer underrun technology, it doesn't really matter. And as you already pointed out, the disc is perfectly usable.

oldandintheway pointed out several possible causes. The biggest would be having other apps running at the same time, HD fragmentation, or the number of files you are burning. Plus, if you are now burning at a faster speed, that would also make a huge difference.

  4. I only burn at 4x and I was burning a dvd video so it's big files.

  5. I still have the problem.

The buffer still drops. It drops less on the C drive the still drops too. I never had thsi before.

Here is a random read speed of my D drive:

So to burn at 4x it should be more than enough.

  6. I do a SMART analysis it I've got these results.

Does the errors come from the hard disk itselft or the ide cable that may be defective ?

Maybe it's the cause of the buffer drops.

SMART usually refers to the HD. With that said, cables are cheap and easily replaced, so it can't hurt to try replacing the cable first.

  8. sounds dumb but if you can do a system restore prior to the 2 weeks and see if that makes a difference. It's just a quick fix

No, I disabled the system restore to have more free hd space

    Some additional thoughts -

Are you running Norton Antivirus, Microsoft Defender, GoBack or other programs which may have been automatically updated recently.

I have noticed an increase in background activity on my systems by these programs recently.
