For some reason my internet connection randomly drops out; but this only occurs with my LAN. My wireless is not affect what so ever. I can easily reconnect by disabling and enabling my Ethernet controller. I have comcast internet and phone with a comcast modem. I'm running windows xp home and I have a Linksys WRT310N router. I don't understand why my LAN is being affected but my wireless is fine. I've searched the web and it seems as this is happening to many others; but I haven't seen a solution. I can print to a network printer during this internet outage. If I go into Network connections, my internet connection is not present, but my local area connection is. Again my laptop is able to surf the web, but my lan computer is not able to.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Try using fixed addresses for your computers on the LAN if you are using DHCP at present and that may help quite a bit. I would also update your LAN adapter's software. It sounds like the problem is with your computer, not the router.

I have Comcast and I had the same problem last month, the tech told me to go to Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings and untick everything.
It fixed my problem. -
Also make sure the network card/port in device manager does not have the power management box ticked.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try one suggestion at a time so that I may know which one actually fixes the problem. Right now I'm running a static ip for my machine and I'm in wait and see mode now.

Other things I've had to do on my home LAN PCs in the past to keep connections alive is set up a scheduled task that cleans out the ARP cache and then pings google every 10 minutes. Don't know why but my server DNS causes the problem I think. If in doubt, Google it. -
Not quite your problem ... but when first moved into my wife's house from my apartment ... I had PacBell DSL. But DSL was not available on this side of town ... yet. So I had no choice but to go with Comcast and I kept my Pacbell - ATT email address by signing up for Dial Up service.
When I would go to work I would be downloading large files of different stuff and when I got home ... I didn't have an active connection ... until I unplugged my Cable modem and then my connection resumed.
So ... to stop that from happening ... I bought a electronic timer and set it to turn off ... two times during the time I was at work ... but it only turned off for about 3 minutes and then turned back on. It was a pain the butt to have this arrangement but at least my connection didn't stay turned off for hours while I was at work.
And now ... I have heard ... Comcast cuts you off if you download too much stuff in a given time.
I'm back to using DSL again ... they finally made it available in this area ... but it is the PRO package ... not the Elite package ... the Elite package is not available here on the far north side of town. -
Well the network card port power management thing didn't solve my problem as my connection continues to drop out. I'm at a lost now.

Try replacing your ethernet cable. I've seen cable go bad before.
Also the ethernet card in your desktop could be going out. Try replacing with a new one. They are not that expensive.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -
it seems comcast actively tries to delay/interrupt p2p downloads. they will disconnect your ip at random times when it detects them. don't bother asking their customer support, they will deny it, but i've seen it happening to several comcast users firsthand. and it only happens to them during their use of p2p.

no, comcast can detect the packet type of a p2p download. until they stop interfering there's nothing you can do on your end. the wireless is probably behind a router nat, most likely they don't see it.
