You may have programs running in the background that could be giving you problems. If you could post the DebugLog.txt file, it may give some insight as to what's happening.

Personally i used dvddecrypter and my 3gp_converter hack to convert it to iPod format (640X360 widescreen) and then stored it on my HD to view later once the "iTV" comes out but hey that was me.... and i'm an Apple/iPod nut

It will backup fine, I been doing various things and don't recall exactly how I did mine last week though.
I am now running DVDRegion+CSS Free on my system in Free Trial mode (I think AnyDVD is about the same thing?), also using DVDShrink 3.2
I am not sure if I made the backup before or after I installed DVDRegion+CSS Free?
Normally I only use DVDShrink and nothing else, but for awhile now I been having some problems but tracked most of those to system problems, mostly hard drive related. Had problems ripping a couple disks, but then also found I could not open some already on the drive from before and also a couple my original content never protected DVDs I authored would not open either, also could not delete them or move them. Lucky I had burned them already and also had backups on another drive.
I moved all the working DVD folders to other drives, deleted the partions on that drive, made new partions of different sizes, formatted those, moved files back, and so far all works fine again.
To begin with I thought it was a problem with DVDshrink because I first noticed problems of getting errors and not able to rip a disk at times, but others ripped fine. So of course I thought Shrink was not working well on some disks at first, now I don't know if Shrink could do those disks ok or not, probably can, but I forgot which ones they were or I would try them again just to see. That's why I ended up installing the DVDregion Free program before I found the drive errors.
Also I been burning all my disks recently as movie only backups, getting rid of all those comercails and menus so the movie just starts playing when put in the player. I probably ripped the Pirates 2 as movie only, or I may have ripped the full disk then made a backup re-authored and shrunk as movie only DVD. I often rip an entire disk then later I shrink or re-author etc..
Try a few different things different ways, the disk will rip fine.
Sometimes it's a pain to track down the cause of errors. Right now I have a backup of Tremors 4 on another system, I start to transfer it through my wireless network and everytime I get to VOB 6 about half way through I get a network path connection error and the transfer stops. I could just rip it to my main system where I want it at, but that would not tell me why it crashes on the network transfer. I can watch it it fine over the network, just not copy it, so the file works! I transfered a larger DVD with about 8 VOBs perfectly, go figure. -
