  1. I have a Pioneer 102D single layer DVD burner and unfortunately I can no longer find decent 4X media readily available for it. It burns and reads flawlessly so I hate to get rid of it. Speed is not an issue for me. I've been out of the tech loop for awhile so is there a decent basic bang for the buck burner out there. I was looking at the Samsung 18X with lightscribe at newegg and the NEC 3550. The nec seems to have a lot of bad reviews at newegg. I primarily backup a lot of movies for personal uses and an occasional xbox game for my son. Can you suggest a replacement for my Pioneer?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but couldn't he just get 8x or 16x media and burn it at 4x? Will his drive not recognize the media?

  8. You have a good question there smitbret. I wasn't aware you could use faster media for an older slower drive. This is my first and only DVD drive. I may have wrongly been under the impression they had to be speed compatible. If that is the case then problem solved! I don't need a new burner. This burner burns and reads most anything and RARELY has a coaster with what's left of my Ritek G04's.

I'll check out those other sources for media you guys suggested.

To the guy who suggested new firmware I already have the latest. There has been no newer versions since my last update.

Thank you all for your input.

If your firmware is up to date, you shouldn't have any problems using faster media, it will just burn at the fastest speed your burner can manage. Or at least you won't have any problems with media that was current at the time of the release of the latest firmware. If Pioneer stopped releasing updated firmware for your drive a couple of years ago, then it may not recognise media introduced since then.

Fujifilm +R (PRODISC-R05-01) which say "1X to 16X" are actually only 4X according to both DVD Decryptor and IMGburn....
