  1. I am using the Windows Media Player DVD encoder to play DVDs. The DVDs play perfectly although It seems that no matter what software I use (Realplayer, WMP etx) the player has an error error and has to shut down seemingly at random. This happens no matter what dvd I am playing and no matter what drive I put it in. I am running XP pro with an AMD duron. It isn't the fastest computer in the world but well above the requirments for simply playing a dvd. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Windows Media Player cannot play DVDs by default. It must have an appropriate mpeg2 decoder installed. Often this is PowerDVD or WinDVD, however there are freeware third party decoders available as well.

What decoder are you using ?
Have you installed any codec packs (k-lite, ACE megapak etc) ?
    Have you installed FFDShow ?

What error messages do you get when this happens ? If you get a generic error message in Windows, try looking in the logs for more details. Right-click My Computer and choose Manage. Expand the Event Viewer branch and click on Application Logs. Look for error entries that coincide with the time the player crashed.

Does the same thing happen if you use VLC or Media Player Classic ?
