  1. I just bought a new Sony Bravia 32' TV with HD - I have a cable box for HD channels and i've never had a cable box before so that's all new to me. My tv has an HDMI connection, but my cable box doesn't - it has a DVI input - I know there are adapters you can buy but they are extremely expensive - I saw one at Circuit City for $140.00 - that's a little much. I called Comcast and they said I could get a cable box with HDMI but it's a DVR - which is good because I also want to be able to record from tv - and i'm tired of the VCR method. BUT, If I want to get that on dvd - what's my option? I have EyeTV on my mac, as well as a Canopus ADVC for capturing - I can only get basic cable to my computer though EyeTV though. I read that you can connect your DVR box to it but My tv is on my wall and eventually all the wires will be behind it so moving things around will be a problem.

I'm considering getting a DVD recorder which I guess will solve issue - but i've been looking at them and they also have HDMI connections - but this will only improve my DVD picture (as opposed to my TV picture with the DVR cable box HDMI connection) with "Upscalling" - keep in mind I have a DVD player that's 5 years old so the only way to connect connect it is through composite cables and an S-Video.

Any ideas on what I should purchase? I'm really new to this!

    thanks in advance.

    $12, DVI to HDMI cable.

If you decide to get the DVR, you'll need to find out what other outputs it has. Most likely you'll need either S-Video or RCA outputs in order to capture it with a DVD recorder or video capture card.

You may also want to check with Comcast to see if/when they will offer a DVR with DVD Recorder.

  4. Thanks for the responses - i've been out of town and have not had a chane to think about this set-up. I am going to call comcast and get more info. I've also been told that Tivo is in fact, "better" than DVR...so...we'll see.

Comcast owes you a DVI to HDMI cable or a new box with HDMI out and an HDMI cable. You are paying for it.

Your basic connection to the DVD recorder will be S-Video letterbox.

Tivo is better than the DVR's I've used. I've used the Dish Network DVR 525 & the Directv R15. They're better than having no DVR, but the DirecTivo Series 2 DVR I have now just blows them out of the water.
