Hi I did post this in the editing forum and have't received any suggestions so I thought I'd try here, I apologize for crossposting and hope to get some feed back here.
I have been using Vegas 7 and using the print to tape feature from the timeline out to my JVC DVD recorder via fire wire to create my DVDs'
It's time to get a new DVD recorder and would like to know if anyone here using Vegas could make a suggestion for a DVD recorder that will allow me to ptt from the timeline. I have tried a pioneer unit with fire wire in but it didn't work for me. Appreciate your suggestions.

I can tell you which ones won't accept firewire output from a PC: Panasonic. All models.
-
Thanks-sounds like all the panasonic models are off the list.
Have you heard about any models that may work? -
I don't know of any that will firewire straight to a PC (that does not mean that there are not any, just that I don't know of any)
I am wondering if you are just editing in DV and have a cam? If so, then out put to the cam and then to the DVD deck. I know it is not what you want, but it could be a work around.IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
I am currently using a JVC MH 30 DVD recorder that allows me to output from my pc via firewire straight to the JVC. Does a really good job. Just need another one and was hoping there might be some options. I'm not sure if the JVC is still available.

Ya know I somehow missed that "Have been" part.
Just curious, does you existing recorder accecpt the stream from other programs as well?IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
I'm not sure which brands or models will do it. I've been trying to write a Windows program to fool my Panny into thinking my PC is really a camcorder, but progress has been slow and painful so I might be looking soon for something similar.

Ask gshelley (use PM) on this forum. I think Toshiba does, but you'd want to ask him on exact make/model (if it does at all).
Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

According to Microsoft, you can make a PC appear like an AV/C device. Unfortunately, the way to do this is to write a kernel mode virtual AV/C subunit driver.

It's a long story. The 1394 stack has 1394bus.sys, 61883.sys and avc.sys for a virtual 1394 device emulating an AVC unit. I'm trying to go where many people have gone before and none of them got very far either
I'm at the point where I need to see what sort of commands the Panny is sending out during its search for a camcorder. I managed to add a Unit Directory to the host Configuration ROM, then ran into a MS bug that won't let you remove it and re-install it again. Research on the web and newsgroups shows that bugs in the MS 1394 stack are the norm, not the exception. So I developed a workaround for that bug. That took 2 weeks by itself. I don't know how familiar you are with all this, but I'm now at the point where I can see the Panny writing responses to the CSR at ffff f000 0d00. The problem is I'm not sending anything that requires a response. Something else in the MS stack must be doing that under the covers. The command/response mechanism is governed by the IEC 61883 standard which I don't have and I refuse to pay $140 for a 45 page PDF file. I've searched high and low on all the underground forums and websites, p2p networks, etc. There is no 61883 standard floating around anywhere. They say you can find anything on the web if you look hard enough. I beg to differ when it comes to 61883. Anyway, after another 2 weeks of determined searching for that with no success I discovered that to make matters worse, Microsoft has virtually no documentation on their 61883.sys driver. What they do provide is basically useless and they have refused to improve that area of MSDN documentation for 5 years now.
It's frustrating, to say the least. If I can't decipher what commands and responses the Panny is sending and responding to, there is no use in going further with an AV/C kernel stream driver. If the Panny doesn't think there's a compatible camcorder it can talk to on the bus then nothing else matters. -
A brave soul, indeed
I've had to work around some MS bugs (notably in msdv.sys and, more recently, Vista audio) and I know the frustration, too, of not being to get hold of standards.
I'm not sure exactly what information you are after but I managed to get some standards from the 1394 Trade Association for free! (Basically, I didn't fall into any of their categories to become a member and only members can buy copies of the standards. I explained my circumstances and they offered me 5 documents for free).
I'll PM you with a list of what I have.John Miller -
Thanks, I'll take a look at those and reply shortly. Much appreciated
Another area of frustration is the new direction MS is taking driver development. The new Windows Driver Foundation aims to make writing device drivers simpler, which is good, but it means everyone is jumping on the bandwagon with fewer and fewer people around to ask about traditional DDK development. It's like trying to find XP information on the MS websites. It's there but at first it looks like it all disappeared under the Vista deluge. And when it comes to 1394 there weren't too many of them to begin with. Most of the relevant discussions I've found are from 2003 and a guy named Bill McKenzie seems to be the only person who actually knows this stuff inside and out. He has some articles on the web that are invaluable. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to post much anymore on the subject of 1394 on Windows.
My own view is that firewire never took off in developer circles because MS never encouraged it. It's Apple technology, not Intel (USB). The difference between online resources for USB development vs. Firewire is like night and day. It makes me nuts when you know something is possible but you can't figure out how to make it work.
Enough rantingGetting a little OT for the DVD Recorder forum.
