  1. I have movie torrent downloaded. I have unpacked the file and tried to burn the image file to a dvd and play it in my set top player. I unpacked it with Win Rar and burned it with DVD Decrypter. It did not work in my dvd player, but it works on my computer. I then tried to extract the ISO image to VOB files with Win Rar. I burned the VOB files with Nero. It did not work in my dvd player, but it worked in my computer. I then tried compressing the VOB files with DVD2ONE and burning with Nero. It did not work in my DVD player but it worked in my computer. Could someone please help me? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Consider the possibility that your standalone player doesn't like your media. Standalones are fussy sometimes and may not like +R or -R or RW or even certain specific brands. Unless you are sure that the exact type (+ or -) and brand of DVDs will work with your player, I'd say consider trying another brand. PC drives are much less fussy about media for a variety of reasons, so probably you have burned the DVD OK and just have an issue with your standalone.

  3. I am using the same media I use to backup all my DVDs. I have used the same type of media without a problem previously. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Is it the correct TV system? (PAL/NTSC) DVD players may be picky (specially if you're in NTSC land) - Computers couldn't care less...

  6. My files are in a Video_TS folder. I have burned many backups by ripping, this is just my first time trying to burn a downloaded torrent.

If I have downloaded PAL files can I convert them to NTSC?

    Thanks.

PAL<>NTSC conversions can get complicated. Check the framerate. If it's 25fps, that may be your problem.

With DVDs, there are 'regions'. Players are limited on which regions they will play. A DVD computer drive also has the region settings. They can be changed up to 5 times, then they are stuck at the last region setting. Computers don't care about the framerate, but the region will cause problems if it's set, as in a commercial DVD. A DVD player will usually warn you that you are using the wrong region disc. It will likely just not play a PAL DVD, even if region free.

PAL and NTSC are formats. There are other less common formats. The main difference in PAL and NTSC is it uses a 25fps framerate. NTSC uses 29.970 and 23.976fps framerate. When you rip a DVD with most programs, the region settings are removed or reset to region '0'. But the framerate doesn't change. The DVD framesize is also different between PAL and NTSC. And there are some other settings that are different.

It's not as simple as just changing the framerate. You have to change the other settings also, along with the audio length sometimes.

You can change the framerate on a DVD, but you would need to 'take it apart' first. You can use a program like VOB2MPG and convert it all to a MPEG file. From there, there are several methods to convert PAL<>NTSC. But you will likely lose the menus as they are more difficult to convert and preserve. Simple is to take the PAL MPEG file you extracted with VOB2MPG and put it in a program like ConvertXToDVD and let it do all the conversion changes, then burn it as a new NTSC DVD. It won't play as good as it did as a PAL video on a PAL player, but it should be good enough. There are other methods in: https://www.videohelp.com/convert#4;41

EDIT: You might take a look at this thread from FulciLives on how to do a PAL>NTSC DVD conversion: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=300144
