    Hi,

I have a server running on win2K server and I use it as a media center too and sometimes while playing videos the screen starts to show only brown and white lines and the sound bugs. I just wanna know if any of you already seen that or something similar

as I said, the comp is running on win2K srever, has an ATI radeon 8500 and soundblaster live 5.1
I use zoom player to play videos and the only programs running in backgrounds are spf, avg, catalyst and azureus. for now it seems the problem only occurs while playing .ogm files and only on a tv screen but I'm conducting tests to know if it occurs somewhen else.

    Thanks in advance

    Djief

EDIT : it occurs on all kinds of videos finally, but only while playing videos it seems
EDIT 2 : it happens with WMP too

Is your server part of your LAN? I use a video server over a gigabit LAN, but it worked the same with a 100Mbs LAN. The server is running XP. No programs really on it except for XP and Nero to burn to disc if needed. I isolate it from the internet with my router and everything that goes on it is scanned before it goes in there.

I run the players locally on my HTPC. The server does nothing but hold the files that I access. The HTPC feeds either to a LCD monitor or through a component output to my video projector. The audio goes out from the HTPC through a optical cable to a surround sound amplifier.

I've never had any problems playing OGM, or about any kind of videos. OGM may require a little more CPU power than an average Xvid. I don't convert the formats. I use VLC for some, Zoom Pro for most.

Win2k should work fine. You might check your Task Manager on both machines and see how much CPU/memory you are using. I use about 25% max CPU on the HTPC during playback of most videos, the same as playing one locally. The server shows 1-2% CPU usage during transfers, so it's usage is very light. I'm wondering if your antivirus or other programs are checking the video output and slowing things down. The Task Manager should show that, though.

If you are actively running Azereus or any P2P client, that can really slow things down, but usually only to the internet. Within the LAN, it doesn't cause problems for me.

But check your Task Manager and disable some of those mentioned programs to see if they are hogging the LAN transfer speed or the computers CPU cycles.

thanks for the reply but apparently it was a codec/driver problem, I just reinstalled my video codecs and video card driver and it works just fine now.
