    I was wanting to buy a slim PS2 for my son, but I wanted to know if it played DVDR's in AVI format. Please let me know. Thanks.

    Not without mod chip (or other means to run SMS or other media center software).
    With SMS, you can play XviD/DivX AVI (with .srt subtitle support) and mp3 audio discs. (or from network or USB stick or basically anything that can be hooked up to the PS2)
