hi i have a toshiba notebook, and when i tried to reformat with a regular reformatting cd, it would freeze in the middle of recognizing the installed components..etc... and it prmpts me that only toshiba "instal cd" will be able to reformat my drive for use, is there a way to by pass what toshiba was put up as a "wall" so that the user uses their winxp recovery cd instead of another normal winxp boot up cd?

There are probably multiple partitions on the HD. I expect you could boot from a boot cd, then run fdisk on the HD.
