The Hitachi 42HDS69 is a Plasma HDTV with a resolution of 1024 x 1080i (supports 1080i but not 1080p)
The Sony KDL-40XBR2 is a LCD HDTV with a resolution of 1920x1080p (supports 1080p).
I didn't bother to look up the Westinghouse.

*sigh* Another "BEST" thread. hehehe! You may want to check the forums at www.avsforum.com . Lots of talk there about televisions.

I suggest going to a store such as Best Buy and trying to look at all 3 and see which YOU think has the best picture. Picture quality is too subjective and what one guy might rave about will be completely unacceptible to someone else. My suggestion would be to forget the Hitachi because my gut feeling is that in a couple of years most people who have TVs that don't support 1080p will deeply deeply regret it and feel like they wasted their money. I predict that in 2 years every HD TV sold will support 1080p and you will not be happy if you appear to be behind the technology curve with an "outdated" TV that isn't very old and wasn't very cheap.
My dad and step-mother bought a Sony HD-TV a few months ago. It only does 720p and I don't know if it's xbr or not, but I haven't noticed any motion problems on it. -
I haven't seen any of these TV's, but I looked them up. Furthermore, specs aren't the only consideration. As stated above, you should check them out for yourself. However, my money would probably be on the Sony.

the only thing about looking at them in a store (which i have done) is that they wont put all of them on a hd connection or blue ray connection.... and the ones that is on hd connections are splitted so many times thru the store i can just imagine how much signal lost has happen.

I bought a Hitachi 42PD8600 yesterday. It's very good for the price. I'd like to see the sound improved, and perhaps easier picture setup, but it's a good screen.
As Epicurus says, go and see them for yourself. Ask for an individual HD source to test each with - if the shop wants to sell it, they'll hook it up for you. Comet did that for me yesterday, no problems. -
Best looking picture from what source?
NTSC tuner?
VHS playback?
Computer desktop?
Interlace (film) DVD?
Interlace (live) DVD?
Progressive DVD?
720p source?
1080i (film) source?
1080i (live) source?
1080p HD/BD DVD player?
Each has a separate path to the screen and a separate set of issues. In most cases, the processing electronics make a larger picture quality difference than the display panel. -
I ordered the Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p LCD Monitor lastweek from Crutchfield.com for $899
remember it doesn't have a Tv tuner built in I also ordered the SAMSUNG DTB-H260F High Definition Terrestrial Tuner for $159 from JR.com(- $10 using google checkout).so my vote goes to the westy -
Off topic, but I just saw a prototype of Samsung's M91 with a 1080p panel. Out of this world....

Try a google search to find reviews of the exact TVs you are looking at. Try looking at cnet.com. They have a lot of info about TVs.
