  1. Hello,

Im sorry if I am reposting a repeated question; however, I have been looking for sometime and have not been able to find a player that does this....

Could someone list the available standalone players that can play divx6 HD resolutions?

    I would really appreciate it!

    Thanks,

In theory, the players in manono's link have the right chipset to do this, but there has been much discussion but there has been a lot of discussion as to whether or not these players can support:
    1) HD Divx on DVD media or only on files sent over the network to the player.
    2) 1080i or even better 1080p output of Divx files.

If you find a model you like, do a lot of research to be sure that the player will really do what you want. If you can wait a little while, Oppo is rumored to be making a player that can output 1080p Divx and if it plays it from DVD media, I'd say that might be the one to get.

My Yamaha dv-s5950 can play all Divx version too but i don't know it can play at HD. It's a upconverted player so i think it can.

  4. Hi,

    Thanks for the replies...

I don't think any of the players in the list can actually do divx6 hd + upconverting from dvd media...

the closest i think is the dp-1100 which does everything but divx6. it does divx5 hd + upconverting.

Also i can't even find the dp-1100 to buy.

If anyone could help find this item to purchase or share about another specific player I would appreciate it.

    Thanks again,

  5. The video encoding of Divx6 is completely backwards compatible with Divx5 decoders. If you look at the fourcc you'll see it's still DX50.

They can, just without the chaptering/menu stuff.

    ...+ upconverting from dvd media...

That wasn't one of your stated requirements. No player is supposed to upconvert over analog connections, although a couple do. Players with the same chipset and digital connectors are due out soon. They'll be able to upconvert DVDs as well as play Hi-Def AVI and WMV videos.

If anyone could help find this item to purchase...

Why would you be interested in the Kiss DP 1100. Like the others, it only has analog connections and can't upconvert DVDs, as near as I can tell. Plus, it's European, so you may have problems getting it up and running in the US. But since you asked:

...or share about another specific player I would appreciate it.

That can play Hi-Def videos plus upconvert DVDs? Keep looking.

Not sure what you mean here?? Is there a way to take a Divx 6 file and convert it to divx5 so you can play it on your dvd player?

  8. The codec used to compress the video in an AVI file identifies itself with a four letter code -- the fourcc. This is how a player knows what codec to use to decompress the video. Both Divx 5 and 6 use DX50. A Divx 5 decoder should be able to play video compressed by Divx 6.

Divx 6's .divx files are simply AVI files with some extra fields. Getting one to play in your set-top player could be as simple as renaming the the file (filename.divx -> filename.avi). A decent player should be able to ignore the extra fields (chapter stops, menus, etc) but if yours doesn't you may be able to simply re-multiplex the audio and video with VirtualDub or a similar program.

Some things that set-top Divx/DVD players don't like include large frame sizes (over ~720x576), certain encoding options (GMC, QPEL), very high bitrates, multiple B-frames, packed bitstream, etc. But both Divx 5 and Divx 6 can produce such files. If the file in question uses any of these features, and your set-top player can't handle them, you will have to reencode the video with settings that are compatible with your player.

  10. In terms of players with disc trays, the JVC SRDVD-100U can play DivX® 6 HD (and its slightly older cousin, the IOData AVeL LinkPlayer 2). I dunno about 1080i/1080p but it can certainly play 720p files, as it contains the Sigma Design EM8621 chipset required for hardware playback of DivX® 6 HD. These players (along with the Buffalo PC-P3LWG LinkPlayer) are mentioned on this DivX.COM page.

If you don't require a disc tray, there are several Networked Media Players that have these same Sigma Design EM8621 chipsets and can, presumably, also play these files direct from an internal hard drive or streaming from a NAS or a networked PC/Mac host via NFS or Samba/SMB - two that come to mind are the TViX M-5000U and the Pixel Magic Systems MB100 & MB200 models.

There is ample discussion of these and other NMP's with this capability over on the AVS Forum site.
