I know if i take the hd out i can plug it in a computer and put a o.s. on it but if i put it back in will it boot up and if not how can i make it boot up.... i have 2 extras throw away ones that work and wanted to make them into my personal dvr computer.... i want to put vista on them

You can't. It is that simple. It does not have any of the components required to make it a computer. If you are really serious, you could try gutting it and replacing ALL the components with actual, small form-factor PC components so your PC fits inside it. But that is as good as it gets.

It's a bad idea to start with, but why in the world would you want to put Vista on them?
Probably the best you can do is take the HDs and put them in your comp for some extra storage space.
Here's a little info if you want to get started hacking them, but seeing as there's no information on the OS (Linux?) CPU type (Intel?) or runtime environment or interpreter used, you could have to write an OS from scratch, and then any applications.

Didn't realize you were serious. The drives would be the only salvagable parts my friend. Even the case would require serious mods to make it a SFF computer as in Gunslingers advice. However, there are success stories regarding adding an extra drive to the 6412 STB for your viewing pleasure.
