Just bought Samsung hd860, returned 1st unit and have 2nd unit but same problem. Machine defaults to 720p on automatic, manually setting output to 1080i signal causes screen to flash on and off until I turn unit off then back on. Then maintains 1080i resolution. Player connected to Westinghouse lvm-42w2 monitor. Anyone else notice this quirk?

Do you see any difference upscaling 720x480p to 1080i vs 720p?

I would think keeping movie DVDs progressive is more important.

  3. Some displays don't deal well with resolution changes on their HDMI input while they are on. Set the Samsung to Manual and 1080i (if that's where you want it), cycle the display off then back on. It should work fine from that point on. If you change the resolution again while the display is on, it will probably hiccup again.

Whether 720p or 1080i output will look better depends on the video processor in your display and the quality of the scaler in your HD860. I have a Sony DVP-NS75H hooked up to a Toshiba 1080p DLP... it looks a little better (slightly sharper and more detailed) set to 1080i. The Toshiba has a really good de-interlacer in it, though. If it didn't, the 720p signal would probably look better.
